sunflare is a popular technique used by many photographers....I personally love pics with creative use of sun.... but to each their own.

You mean the subject squinting looking at the sun? :) And having harsh shadows? That's what fill-flash is for when you shoot with the sun behind the subjects. I love flare, it's very creative and lots of professional actually use this technique.
