How much does Canon charge for lens calibration if you don`t have a warranty anymore?

Depends on the region, in Australia it's about $150 AUD, and sometimes they even replace parts like damaged circuit boards as part of the cost

My experience is that getting a lens calibrated is often useless, you need to get your lens and camera calibrated together. Canon usually give a discount in this regard. (but you can try to get it calibrated individually first to see if that alleviates the problems to save costs)

You also get a warranty on the work, so you can get a free re-calibration for whatever the rework period is (in Australia, 6 months)

Is AF microadjust not working for you?

It is hard to pinpoint what I need to set the Micro Adjustment to.
Sometimes the -5 looks just as good as the +5 while zero looks the worst.
So don`t know what to set it to.

What I suggest is setting up a large flat target (e.g. a rigid box with contrasty text on it (e.g. Canon Lens Box - though this may be too small) that more than encompasses the AF point (the bigger the coverage the better)) and set it up parallel to the front of the lens at least 10X focal length away from the camera. Then take a series of shots using standard procedures (i.e. on Manual, Tripod, self timer etc.) at -10, -5, 0 and +5 and +10 at about 3 shots each, manually defocusing, and then AFing again. inspect which of them are on average sharpest, then narrow your test to that range.

if you find sometimes -5 is as good as +5 it means your test isn't stringent or accurate enough

Which lens are you talking about. If a zoom, it's not uncommon that the lens is off different amounts at different focal lengths and sometimes at different distances. You lock it in at one focal length one distance and it throws it off at other distances and focal lengths. Depends what's wrong with the lens to start with.

Bohdan - I may be, and probably am, completely wrong.

I just had a 70-200 2.8 done by Canon Irvine.
$177.48 total.
Comes with 6 months warranty.

Pictures look the same to me.
I don't think they did fix.
Will try it for a month and see.

Well it seems like all my lenses are off a bit. I`d say +5 but the one that bothers me the most is the 100-400.
Here is an example of what I am talking about.

As you see the focus is somewhere in the middle as I labeled and the branch to the far right is in focus which is waaaay off from the focus point.
I didn`t do many test shots like this but this seems to happen only when I shoot at long distance at infinite

Some will disagree with my method but I screwed around with mine all day. Here is what I did to get mine fined tuned. I took pictures of fake flowers in a vase with the flowers at different distances away. They were only 2" apart, so not a great amount. I then focused on the flower that was in the center away and took the shots. All of it was done at the smallest appeture # off of a try pod. My first shot was focusing on the front flower and + 5 setting was real close to where I wanted to be but I ended up with +4 being the best.
With my 50d the 28-135mm kit lens is at a +4 micro adjustment and my 70-200mm f/2.8L ended up with a +9. Now she takes some very good picture. This is my method and my method only and it works for me. Good luck with your lens tuneup.

I've sent mine three times there and it always would come back the same. I had to go via legal channels and they asked me to send the gear one last time. I agreed on condidtion that I would not send them to Irvine and sent it to New Jersey instead. That did work and finally I can take some pictures :-)

I had my 70-200 2.8L calibrated by Canon Australia abouth the middle of last year and I was charged $99.00.
They stuffed it up and made it much worse only in the opposite direction.
Due to the warranty they give, they happily fixed it again for free.
Perfect 2nd time round.

I just sent my sigma 10-20mm lens in to get serviced. It ran me $95 plus $10 for shipping.. Still waiting to get it back so I'm not sure what the results will be. :-)
