One of our better looking ducks! These are the deepest diving of the ducks and have been known to dive to depths of 200'.

These are the coolest looking ducks, and good shots of them also. Ducks that I've only seen pictures of, so thanks for sharing these.

Thanks Sharon...they breed in the Arctic and winter along the coasts as far south as the mid states. They are also found in the great lakes in the winter. These were taken on Lake Ontario. Unfortunately not many find their way to Alabama :)

Nice looking ducks Scott. I wonder what kind of adaptation the long tails are for?

Very nice exposures of a difficult (B & W) duck. There is a female of this species being reported right now on Town Lake in Austin, TX. I have never seen one, thinking about driving over.

I'm not sure Mitch, but they use their wings for underwater propulsion so maybe the long tail acts as a rudder??

Scott, did you shoot these in Oshawa Harbour? If so, you must have been using a cannon of a lens! I was out there yesterday and saw them along the far breakwall at the marina entrance hanging out with some Common Mergansers.

Cheers, great shots!

They dive to 200ft - that's pretty darn deep! Great looking duck and very nice shots.
