hey there guys, I have researching and looking madly through the lens archives. I am looking at the 70-200 as most of every ones questions seem to be about. It will be my workhorse lens once i get it, used for; portraits, events, candids, sports and all around use. After looking through the 70-200 archives the F4IS seems to have the most eye catching sharpness while the 2.8 and 2.8IS have better bokeh for obvious reasons.

My tax return enough for either the F4IS or the 2.8 non IS. I can afford the 2.8IS just would have to throw a few hundred at it. I am going to go new so full price is what im looking at.

I was wondering if you fellow members could post pictures mainly portraits and candids with the 70-200 F4IS, 2.8, and 2.8IS.

Here is where advice is needed. I could "save" money if i went Prime Time. 200 2.8L, 50 1.4 and eventually 85 1.8. Another train of thought is get 70-200 F4IS or 2.8 non IS and a 17-40L or something like it and selling my sigma 24-70 2.8. I have an XTi as a second body but am looking to sell it so i can either get a 30D, 40D or 50D as a more comfortable second body. the body would be later as i am building a 2 light strobist style set up and am unsure if i should just get another sigma 530 ex Super or sell my sigma 530 super and get 2 580 exii if i can find them used. i have also been looking at the 135L a little and there is an 85L (not mark 2) on craiglist for $1100.

I would just like some words of thought to come my way not just like get 70-200 2.8 IS its the best. I can handle going with primes but would like know if anyone uses a prime setup for events/weddings and so on.

Very long story, but from what I see there, I would suggest you'd go for a setup of slow zooms and fast primes. Budgetwise that would be fine now, whether you opt for a 70-200 F/4 IS first, or a few primes first.

Personally, I am quite happy with such a setup, as I find that for the conditions I use my primes in, generally speaking fast zooms are not fast enough. Therefore I use the zooms in better light conditions or on a tripod, and IQ of the slower zooms is very, very good anyway. And when I need fast, I just grab a prime.

Kind regards, Wiim
