Canon 40d, Sigma 20mm f/1.8 handheld (but both elbows braced on my desk). iso200, f/1.8 1/60. Burst mode and best one out of the bunch. My focus point was the head of the moth. This was just a quick thing, landed on the keyboard (damn, it's a dirty keyboard now that I see it in the pic).

I don't think I was moving at all in this. Don't have a tripod anymore.

Here's a "real world" shot. iso100, f/3.5, 1/100 focus point i think was between the eyes.

Due to the razor thin DOF, a tiny camera movement could account for the focus shift on the moth. Its not easy to shoot high magnification macro handheld.

Here's my 20mm on the 5D, with the lens hood resting on the desk. Focus on the Z, straight out of the camera, no PP. The DOF is very thin.

ISO-1600
f/1.8
1/13 sec

real world shot looks good. for the macro, your DOF looks like 1mm. Your focus issues easily could have been camera shake

I agree that the real world shot looks fine. Now, this isn't really relevant to the OP...but I just have to say...that bokeh is HIDEOUS!

Your elbows are front focusing. Get new elbows.

Damn, I think the warranty is out on those.

Since it's gonna be a nice warm 80f here in Austin today, I'll go and play around with the lens some after work.
