So, my wife had a glass of Diet Dr. Pepper on the counter last night, and it did something weird. The glass is thick, and as far as we know, it had NO imperfections or cracks. It was used as part of a set on a regular basis. The bottom has a slight upward concave, so when it is set in liquid, or develops condensation, it forms a weak suction under the glass. It is so weak, it is only faintly noticeable.

Well... Last night Sarah picked her glass up from the bar, and I heard her gasp. I looked over to find Diet Dr. Pepper all over the sofa, and her holding the hollow remains of her glass. Apparently, the suction was strong enough, while the glass weak enough, to rip it in half (actually into about a 1/3 vs. 2/3 chunk). I'm not completely clear as to how it happened, but it was very odd, and a bit interesting.

Here are 2 pictures. The first is how it would normally look, and the second shows and abnormally clean break...

I have a set of glasses that is slowly going away exactly in the same manner. The bottoms just fall off. Out of a set of 8, I only have two left. Sometimes they break in the sink, but I have had one break while I was holding it. It must be some type of internal stress or something.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

Grab a "schooner" (google it ;) ) fresh out of the glass washer, let it cool just a little, not too much. Start filling with beer (straight from the ice cold keg/tap) and you'll usually get a nice crack straight through the glass. Basically cuts it in half from top to bottom. If you're lucky, it split too and you'll be left with an empty glass being held together by your hands with beer all over the place. lol

Kinda makes you wonder just what they put in that good ol' Dr. Pepper.

One of my favorite soft drinks, by the way. Try a "White Pepper" sometime: 2/3 Dr. Pepper, 1/3 milk. Delicious!

Warning!!! Pour the Dr. Pepper into the glass, then add the milk. not the other way around--unless, of course, you like messes.

Common story. The promotional and "jelly-jar" glasses last forever. The "pedigreed" glasses break if you look at them crooked.

We only have acrylic glasses these days. Mostly because of my daughter, but also because stuff like this would happen with our VERY expensive Target glasses (okay, not so expensive, probably $5 each). Once you go acrylic you never go back...
