Rental lens UV filter?

Just received a rented lens and it came with a UV filter. The information from the rental store states that the filter is to be keep on at all time to protect the front element. While I do appreciate that they don't want their lenses scratched I'm also thinking that I paid to rent this lens, I want to use it to it's potential.

The filter on it is a Tiffen, and says nothing about multi coating, so I'm thinking this might not be the best quality filter.. I'm no anti-filter fundamentalist, but I usually don't use one. And I don't want to use a cheapo non-multi coated one when I rent an expensive lens. I have a MC one I'll put on instead at least, but would rather not. But from the sound of it this would breach the rental contract? I even paid extra for insurance, but afraid not having a filter on would void any protection if something happens?

Opinions? Do others keep the filters on with rentals? Even cheapo ones?
Thanks

Your choice clearly. Shoot without the filter. If the lens gets marred then it's a case of 'bend you spend'. Simple.

yeah, I'm not going anywhere hazardous so the chances of anything happening to the glass (that a filter would prevent) are very small.

And if it does isn't the insurance supposed to cover that?? That's the only thing that worries me: that they will say I didn't use a filter so the insurance wont cover any damage..

You could always call them up and ask. I would think that if anything did happen to the front element and even though you purchased insurance, they would say that you didn't use the filter and the warranty is void, like you said. I would either put your better filter on it or, if you're willing to take the risk, take it off completely. It's up to you.

So take it off. They won't know unless you scratch it, which you seem pretty confident that you won't.

What's the big deal? Do you seriously notice a difference with and without a UV Filter? :S

I'm not fully opposed to filters, and I haven't done a proper test to check whether I can see a difference. Some swear they do, others don't. Took a couple with and without now and will see if I can tell

But this Tiffen filter I can use as a mirror while it's on the lens so I can't imagine it wont have some effect on quality..

Other filters, for sure. UV - The only reason I have them on mine is to save scratches, dust, etc. Though I really don't think they make a difference on image quality.

And Tiffen is a decent enough brand.

Call them and ask. Suppose that you wanted to use a CPL? Do they expect you to stack filters? All you'll get on the forum is a 50-50 mix of people's opinions. Call the rental company and ask them...I'm sure they don't bite.

I agree on the call and ask, every company is different - mine doesn't put filters on anything except the Canon 17-55 IS.

But with filters I think its more than just assessing a test shot - one of the big issues is reflection more than degrading image quality. My experience with cheap filters is they're just fine usually with the light behind you, but have some light at the right angle entering the lens (I've done it with sunlight but even candles) and you suddenly get ghost images. Its hard to predict.
