Just for everyones knowledge I went and tried to fit my Acer 16" wide screen laptop today in the UD 60.
The laptop measures 15.25 x 11.125 x 1.50 and it just fits, it's tight but it does fit.

Not yet, perhaps by tomorrow. I just got it today and right now I'm trying to figure out how to pack it. My 5D MkII with the grip and RRS L-Plate does fit into one of the front pockets, but I didn't like it there so it's in the main compartment (not attached) along with a 16-35LII with hood reversed, a 24-70L with hood reversed, a 70-200 2.8L IS with hood reversed, 1.4xTC, and a 2xTC. One front pocket has my 580EX and the other holds my Sekonic L758-DR. Not too keen on how that pushes the pockets out, but hey not too shabby.

I'm beginning to think I could have used a UD70 or UD80. ;)

I'm having a really hard time believing a 17" will fit in there - maybe one where the screen goes right to the edges. My 14.1 fits with barely enough room to put the cord next to it and, as you mentioned your 16" just fits.

Great review.

How is the size compared to a 7MDH? Why did you purchase this instead of the UD50?

Yup and the end pockets take a water bottle or 580 nicely...or both, one at each end

Great review.

How is the size compared to a 7MDH? Why did you purchase this instead of the UD50?

Looking perpendicularly at the side which holds the main buckle for the flap, the UD60 is about 1.5-2 inches wider and taller, while the depth of the bag (distance from closed front-flap through the bag to your hip, while carrying it) is about the same. The Crumpler overall has a more rounded feel, the UD60 more box-like (mainly due to its padded laptop-compartment).

I bought the UD60 because it was the largest UD bag and I wanted to fit as much gear as possible in it for getting gear from a to b (while still being able to shoot out of it). I was not able to try out the 50 or 60 before buying, so I went for the biggest one because I'd rather have too much room than too little.
Now that I have extensive experience in using the bag I know that
a) Its still a great bag that meets or exceeds expectations every time I use it
b) As i have a 15" laptop I could personally quite possibly have gotten away with using the UD50, and I suspect its smaller form factor might also make it feel slightly more convenient to shoot out of (ie. a bit easier to move around on your hip - more "space efficient" on your body, if you like).

The reason I suspect I might have gotten away with the UD50 and still fitted almost the same amount of equipment is that the UD60s main inner compartment divided by equally spaced separators leaves 3 very spacious vertical slots for your lenses - a 70-200 w/hood reversed and a 100-400 w/hood reversed both fit easily into these slots - almost with room to spare on the sides. In fact, I frequently find myself packing 2 x 580EXII flashes in their black padded Canon cases side by side into one of the slots. So I believe there is plenty of room for the UD50 to shrink the size of the slots by half an inch each without affecting the ability to carry said lenses.

If I'm only going to shoot (no laptop), I tend to use the 7MDH because I just love the layout and because it is as small as possible. I might be getting the 8MDH for its added depth to more comfortably fit the 100-400 on-camera. Incidentally, the UD60 will fit this no problem, but I'm a bag-o-holic and I'm just looking for an excuse to get myself another fix. ;)

James

considering that this 'disguise' bag makes t look like you are carrying a laptop.. isn't it -more- likely to be stolen, as the potential thief thinks its a more usable item contained therein?

Thieves don't steal items so they can use them. They steal to to sell to whoever they can for the best price.

I would think that even the most inexperienced thief knows that a bag full of camera equipment is worth more than a used laptop.

Still, I always thought the "disguise" part was just so that you are not readily identified as a "guy with a camera". :D

Have you seen the price of cheap laptops these days? Is it even worth the bother for a crim to nic a cheap s/h lappi?

i love my ud60 also.

i have a 40d gripped w/a 17-55, and i fit in a 70-200L f4 IS, 85mm 1.8, a sigma 10-22, and 580exii, with my dell xps m1330 laptop (with camera bracket, flash cord, power plug, hard drive, etc). :)

Thanks for saying that, that sounds almost exactly like the kit I want to carry.
