suggested accessories for macro

new to all of this..
I am going to get the canon 100mm macro lens
It will be mostly for butterflies and flowers outside
I have a tripod.
Are there other accessories that you would highly recommend to use with this lens, such as filters, a hood etc??????

Flash, bracket and softbox

I use a Siegelite articulating flash bracket for macro work. Siegelite no longer distributes this specific bracket but, it is frequently available on eBay; usually for under $20. It can articulate and place your flash anywhere you want it. I found that right over the macro subject is best.

Obviously, I use an off-camera sync cord. There are Chinese knock-offs available but, I use a Canon OEM off camera cord.

I use an old Lumiquest mini softbox, but there are Chinese knock-offs available (usually for under $20) which will do the job adequately.

I now use a Canon 550EX flash but, previously used a 420EX. I like the 550EX because of better manual capability.

This set-up is great for hand holding (although I have it mounted on a tripod for illustration [purposes). The two handed grip - right hand on the camera + shutter release and left hand holding the bracket handle - allows a very stable hold.

Think I would just get out there with what you have got and get some pics and see if you need something. The only thing that might be useful if you are planning lowish magnification shots in natural light might be a lens hood. I gather the 60mm EF-S hood is ok for the 100mm and is a bit shorter.

I agree with LordV, get out and take some macro photos and see if you need something. It is what I did when I first got my Canon 100mm f/2.8 with my 10D 6+ years ago

I ended up making a home made hood for my lens for a little bit of protection from flare and subject soon after

Yes, have a play around with it for a while. When you've done that do think about a flash bracket and off-camera flash cord to get a fairly powerful flash gun off camera and down by the side of the front of the lens, and a flash diffuser.
And then start playing around again!!
