I've never really tried "advanced" pp stuff... Could you do that kind of stuff with just a single shot? Or do you need to have multiple exposures?

CS5 can make HDR from single shot too .. it's more or less what I tried to do to correct my sample.
There is more or less 12 EV in Canon 5D MKII RAW files (14 in Nikon D7000 and Pentax K5) ...
Unfortunately I noticed, you can't extract the 12 EV with DPP, but with CS5 (and I suppose RAW Therapy too) you can do it..

I personally would shoot multiple exposures. For that image Newworld posted, it's possible to get the dynamic range. I would expose for three images. One for the highlights, one for shadows, and one for the water. Then manually blend it in. Exposure blending takes patience but, it can be done. :)

Thank you .. next time I will do it  ..
I don't mind to take time for post processing. It reminds me ancient time in bathrooms to try to develop and print B&W with paper masks to enhance shadows or avoid burned parts  ..

Thanks .... To tell the truth, I didn't spent much time for post processing and I mostly don't like HDR Style.. but, that's right with CS5 I could extract all the dynamic of the raw file and just get as natural as it should have been in my first post..

So I have corrected my sample and the initial post.

I see, thanks.

I wouldn't call this HDR, however, as I did similar things back in my analog days. Apart from exposing and developing for a particular scene, just some burning and dodging, although this is a little easier with digital.

Considering I worked with an 8-stop jpeg, where the highlights were really lost, and CS4, I guess I didn't do too badly on your image :D.

In the end it is about selcting the tonal range and compressing the DR in a curve that will fit the medium on which it is displayed, without looking overcooked (IMO anyway :D).

Kind regards, Wim

I'm assuming that's somebody else's gripped 7D you're taking a photo of? Else if that's your 7D, you've got some tricks up your sleeves that you need to share with us.
