well, this is why I gave up on this lens.
It supposed to be black print on white paper, why is is it cyan and magenta?
Even in this small scale it shows how bad this lens is.
And the quality of the bokeh is quite disappointing, check this latest out:

strong cyan CA on the bg edges and a strange bokeh again...

not sure what's going on with this lens.
I bought it twice already and both copies disappointed me completely.
At this point I'm not trying again. I was "unlucky" to get my 2nd copy on the same day
I got my Zeiss 21 ZE and comparing those two was very cruel to Canon 24L II...

That's lateral CA, and it's very common.

Personally I've yet to see a fast wide lens offer amazing blur quality and no CA. There may be some out there, but I doubt they're AF lenses.

Cool, have fun with it! Focusing manually is pretty much out of the question for what I use the 24L II for, but if it works for you that is a great option! Is that an f/2.8 lens?

+1 on the above.

In my experience, the 24L is an awesome lens.

I have pretty much all of Canon's ultra fast glass including the 24IIL, 50L and 85IIL. They all produce the same cyan / magenta CA. It goes with the ultra fast territory...it's a consequence of bright apertures. Try the Noctilux 50mm and you'll find the same. It's even present on a 70-200/2.8.
A zeiss 21mm, that's not an f1.2 or f1.4 lens. If you stop these lenses down, the LoCA disappears.

Agree on 85L II and 24L II. Both CA kings. I sold my 85L II partially because of that.
50L I have is much, much better, almost no CA wide open. My 35L is also very good.
It just proves how bad Canon quality control is and how random those lenses can be...

It's even present on a 70-200/2.8.

A little contradiction in one sentence ;)
You say 70-200 f2.8 has it, Zeiss IS a f2.8 lens and doesn't have any of it. None.
Also it's not true CA goes away completely stopped down, it's less visible,
but I could see it on my both copies of 24L II at f8 also...

Look enjoy your lenses guys, I think it's not as good as I was expecting,
tried two copies and sent both copies back.
I might be extremely unlucky to try two "bad" ones. I might be extremely
lucky to have two great copies of my 35L and my 50L.

I'm just sick and tired of Canon producing so many "bad" copies and charging
for those lenses so much. Comparing to the quality of the Zeiss lenses,
it's not even close.

I have low standards. Life seems more enjoyable this way. I'm certain someone can produce a CA-less lens. But I'm also certain it'll come with a huge price tag (because whoever makes it can brag and market it as such).

My favourite lens...

A few recent pics, all handheld and at f1.4 or thereabouts:

Absolutely! It is high on my list! First I would like a CV 40mm Ultron in EF mount, though.
