Just tossing this out there for discussion.
The file options (RAW, sRAW1, sRAW2) allow for a lot of options from point and click all the way up to huge poster size.
The FPS is fast enough for sports (heck, I had 4 fps as a custom setting with my Mark III and it did very well)
The IQ is some of the best out there.
The battery grip has the AF ON button.
HD video.
Very good high ISO performance.
920000 dot LCD.
Lightweight and compact when compared to 1 series.
Lens Peripheral Illumination Correction.
Cool Live View features.

And that's leaving out the full fram vs not full frame discussion. The more I read about it, the better it starts looking.

When price is a consideration to an extent, is it the best Canon has? Thoughts?

THIS IS NOT A BEST BANG FOR THE BUCK THREAD :D

I would say the 40D body is the best bang for the buck. The 5D II is around the same price as a used 1D Mark III and sometimes more. I think the 1D III offers a lot as a camera as well. The Rebel series also offers great IQ for a low price. Its really debatable, depends what you want. For me the 40D would offer the best bang for the buck.

No way no chance in hell is it the best Canon for the buck. For the price of a 5DII you can get a 5D Classic and an 85L, or a used 1D Mark III. I actually think the 5DII is, despite being a phenomenal camera, a very poor camera in the 'bang for the buck' department. All new models are.

Best bang for the buck has to be the 40D, maybe a Rebel, and maybe the 5D classic or 1D2 if used prices don't keep going up.

I think 40d. The best bang for you buck is to replace the 5d2 with a 1d3 :).

depends how much buck you have and how much bang you need.

I would think a mkII or 5D Classic would be a better bang for the buck, and the 30D is only ~$450 used, so that would have to be in the running.

For the buck? My XT still takes great pictures, and you can get like 6 of them for the price of a 5d classic, or about 4 of them for the price of a 40D. Of course the 40D has features that are well worth the price to those that need them. Not to be one of "those guys", but best canon for the buck is just the best canon for YOUR buck, and your needs.

Sorry I should have clarified that my opinion doesn't include used cameras. The 1D Mark II is the obvious winner there :D This isn't bang for the buck, it's best current Canon for the buck.

Seriously though, yes the 40D is good, the 50D is good, but I don't think I'd badge either one of them as 'great'. The Mark III is great, but is the 5D mark II maybe better?

Even with those qualifiers, not a chance in hell. In fact, even less of a chance in hell. 40D or XSi wins.

Better...value for money? Or better camera? I think I disagree with you no matter how you interpret it actually . 40D = best value for money. 50D = better camera, worse value for money. 1DIII = best camera ;).

Buying new is always poor bang for the buck anyway, I never buy camera bodies new, it's a ripoff.

It depends on what you want to do. A camera that craps out on you when you need it most is zero bang for the buck. If I were a PJ in Iraq, I'd carry 1D3. I wouldn't even consider anything else.

For the portrait photography I do, the 5D2 is most definitely the most bang for the buck because it earns me the most bucks at the lowest cost. With the 5D2 I can sell 30x40 family portraits that look just as good as those from my Mamiya RZ67 cameras. The only other Canon that can do that is the 1Ds3.
