I'm in the fortunate postion to potentially throw down for a change up in my gear.
I'm going back and forth between a lot of different options. I have a 40D and I've owned almost everything else except for the 5D and the 1Ds cameras.
I shoot everything, sports, portraits, landscape.
I loved my Mark III and it's the best thing I've shot with but I've also found my self in many positions in which a 2nd body would have been helpful. My 40D is a good jack of all trades, master of none camera.
I'm leaning towards keeping the 40D and going with the 5D classic, ditch my 17-55 and grab a 16-35 and I think that would be a good two body setup.
I appreciate everyones advice!

40D + 5D is a nice combo, I went that way for a while. Only thing that used to screw me up was that the button layout on the top is different, so I would have to think about it more when trying to make quick changes. For some reason the obvious difference of button layout on the back of the camera never seemed to bother me.

I am shooting the 40D and the 5D2. The only negative for me is that, as I become more and more used to looking at those 21mp files, the 40D shoots look coarse at 100%. A 50D would solve some of that, I guess.

I think canon has my number. :)

BTW -- if you are in the position of shooting for money, then 2 bodies is really not an option, but a necessity. My 5D2 crapped out on me at the beginning of a catalog shoot this week. The 40D saved the bacon.

I shoot the 40D + 5D combo as well.

It took me a while to come to terms with mixing FF and Crop but now I find I like the mix and it allows me to maximize my options.

I can go really wide (17-40) and get wonderfully shallow DOF with the 5D (50 f/1.4, 85 f/1.8) while still being able to really reach out and touch subjects with the 40D (100-400, 300 f/2.8 and TCs)

I also have a 70-200 which bridges both bodies perfectly.

I'm in the same position. I have a 5D and a 40D and am finding myself not using the 40D at all. I'm seriously considering selling both to buy a 5D2.

I voted for the 40D and 5D because they both do certain things well and complement each other.

40Dand 5D is a killer combo! I use the 5D 80% of the time and the 40D primarily for wildlife shots. Still keep wondering if I should upgrade to a 50D though - the addtl. MPs would come handy for cropping and I love the idea of lens calibration on the 50D. But somehow I keep holding back - not sure it is really enough justification to spend more money.

The 40D is my backup for sure now, but once soccer and football season rolls around, it will see lots more use. The crop sensor gives me a log more reach than I can't afford to reproduce in glass.

FWIW, I'm on the fence with this same issue.

That's what's holding me back at the moment. I'm going to South Africa at the end of the year and I think the extra reach and FPS of the 40D will come in handy. Just not so sure I want to lug two cameras around.

And this is why I love the mark III. In my opinion, the 1.3 is the best of both worlds.

The 5D / 40D setup was what I had for around 4 months. Absolutely awesome combo. For the slight hit in IQ/High ISO capability, you gain all of the bells and whistles of a 40D (FPS, cross type AF, Live View, etc.). I sold off my 40D to fund glass because I simply was not using the 40D enough, but for someone who needs 2 bodies, the 5D Classic / 40D combo is an economical killer combo.

L, Canon 85 f/1.2L II, Canon 70-200 f/2.8L IS II, Canon 500 f/4L IS

I would love the 40D + 5D combo if I could afford it. That's a winning combo in every way to me!

I think that's what I'm leaning towards. Adorama has a decent refurb kit (http://www.adorama.com/ICA5DRA.html (external link)) but I think I can save even more money on the forum.
Anyone got a 5D to sell? :D
