are there any portable power generators ( or whatever it should be called ) thats a cheaper alternative to the vagabonds? something safe to use with studio strobes obviously

Even if you build your own, you end up spending almost as much. The inverter alone is like $130, + battery and enclosure of some kind. The Explorer is its closest competition.
