WOW you have got some awesome colors going on here! Her eyes stand out so much...so blue.

You did a great job with this, my sunset shots always turn out lousy!:(

The colors and exposure are nice, I don't find her large oversized coat to be flattering for her, especially with her hands in its pockets. Seems more of a snapshotish pose to me. Also the photo needs to be rotated a little clockwise to get a straight horizon, but even with that I think she is leaning a little to the left not standing straight.

I agree with everyone about the coat. The sun is way to bright so I tend to focus on the sun and not the subject.

I agree about the coat...

Also, something about the lighting... it seems unnatural to me. Almost as if she is just standing in front of a backdrop of a sunset in a studio.

Yea the coat looks a bit large, but I don't dress them, just shoot them....
Kids these days wear clothing differently than when we were kids.

I'm thinking I could have knocked down the ambient a stop or two to make your eyes drawn towards her instead of the sunset. I agree that the sun may be too bright in this photo. (above)

Anybody have any suggestions for the hands? I'd like some alternative pose for the next sunset photo I shoot. This photo didn't have the hands in the pockets and has minimum editing done.

the colors are awesome but it seems like shes being blind sided. Deer in the headlights look on her face. Second shot is good but a little too cold on her and too warm on the backround for my taste

Bill, This is a a great setup.... I would change a couple of things.

Pic#1 Need to get your lights higher. Try getting them at about the two oclock position. It looks like in this shot your lights are creating a flat affect and they are way to low....(notice her chin area is brighter than her forehead) Remember Short lighting females always makes them look better. I would try only using one light in this setup. Coming from camera right. Have her turn so that sun is reflecting off the back of her hair... this will allow the sunset light to give a great hairlight....

Pic#2 Just raise the light to around two oclock position..... I would lower power just a tad.... this would have created a good light I believe.....

Hands with coats is tough..... thumbs hanging on the pockets with remainder of hand hanging out would work.... in the second shot have her hold run her hands up close to her colar on both sides......

What lens are you using with these shots?

Hope this helps.

Yes, the lights were about head level. I see what you mean by the lighting on her head and her chin. Now that you've pointed it out it's really obvious to me. I will definitely try your suggestions next time.

I didn't post the second image at first because of the way the jacket opened up with her hands in the back making her look like she was slouching. Next time I'll take your advice and raise the lights.

I was using the 24-70L lens for this shot. When you suggested a single light was that without a reflector?

Thanks for the suggestions again...
