Just had to post these as someone complained on another thread about how it took forever for the 100mm macro to focus.

I think my shots, taken yesterday, of these VERY sweet but nervous and quick-to-flee little birdies proves that if you're out of the "macro-zone", the 100mm is faster than a whip-crack.....well, almost!
:D

Nice shots. I have a very in focus shot of a goldfinch in flight taken with my Sigma 105. They aren't just for Macro work. :)

The 100 macro focuses beautifully and quickly but not necessarily where you want in macro work. That, I suspect, is where most of the "not fast" type comments would come as to that lens and why it takes a while to achieve the specific focus you want (especially for us macro newbies). For non-macro shots it's fabulous.

Thanks for the comments guys. And with the 100 macro being slow, in all the threads I've read about people complaining, they seem to avoid stating exactly when it can be slow. And that was my point...other than these being very pretty little birds!

Lenses are all a compromise, but when someone says, "this lens is crap/slow/AF's badly, etc" I think it's pointless unless qualified with a statement such as, "...if used in low light/only when in the macro zone/when used in servo-mode/etc."

Maybe I should shove this in the lens section......?

Nice birdie shots. :)

I'll admit that I've been a complainer about the AF on the 100mm macro lens, although not when I use it for macro, as I use manual focus for macro.

As for the when of my complaining - it's in low light. Compared to other lenses I have this one's AF in low light is s l o w. ;)

Thanks for that, Athena!

Of course, it is slow in low light, but then, most lenses are...

Just happy you like the pics :D
