You probably "could", but then you wouldn't have the proper balance and you'd defeat the purpose of having a gimbal mount. The whole principle of a gimbal is that it relies on being perfectly balanced to stay in place, instead of using friction like a ball head. I'd be hard to look through the viewfinder at any more of an angle as well, the tripod would be in the way of your face :)

Can you give us your views on that 400 DO. Lens the cost is hard to swallow but it seems, due to size and speed as if it could be a great lens coupled with a 1.4xtender

Amortized over enough wildlife photography trips and years the cost becomes less of an issue over time. If I can live long enough. ;)

Briefly put, I wouldn't have carried a heavier lens on many of the trips I've taken and thus missed out on some great shots.

Don't want to derail this thread, but there are many others here that specifically discuss the 400 DO.

Hey Spitfire thanks for the review as the timing was right because I was looking for a tripod and head but there was so much out there, plus I did not want to spend $5-700 on just a head alone for the equipment that I have. I was able to get the Manfrotto tripod 055xprob and the Jobu for about $400.

I just received my Jobu Jr. Kit (side/horizontal mount) and all I can say is this is going to make things a lot easier for me. It's very fluid and once balanced stays put. I'd suggest to anyone considering this unit to thouroughly consider the horizontal mount (full gimal). This way you get the best of both worlds - side mount or horizontal mount.

I ordered mine directly from Jobu (http://www.jobu-design.com/index.html (external link)). Mr. Ian was excellent and shipping was fast. I ordered it Friday and received it the next Weds (3 day shipping from Canada).

Now, I've never tested any of the other gimbals so do not in any way take my comments as a comparison to other gimbal heads. My criteria for a gimbal was quality at an affordable price and it didn't have to be a name brand. I checked out the other brands but like said I didn't want to spend $5-600 on just the head. I read this and other reviews about this product and it was a no brainer for me. For those on the fence, check it out.

Again thanks Spitfire.

Peace
