Completely agree. This is destruction of property through negligence.

Its not okay to accidentally break people's things.

omg, give me a break!! the guy had his camera on a table in a restaurant. some restaurants are very crowded and barley has enough space for people to walk through. if the guy was careless enough to leave his camera with the strap dangling, he is at fault and nobody else. if i am in a restaurant and i accidentally bumped into a table where some idiot left a very expensive item on the edge of the table, i am not paying for crap.

this is exactly what is wrong with the world, there is not more personal responsibility. omg, i was a moron and left my things all exposed and they are busted so instead of taking responsability,i am just going to sue somebody.

EXACTLY.

Its the person who BROKE THE CAMERA who should be paying to have it fixed. Not the victim.

A camera on a table is not "exposed". The camera man was not being lazy. The woman who was swinging her bag around onto other tables was the one being lazy, and should take responsibility for destroying someone's property.

I take it you were there then, and saw this?

i love the "swinging her bag around" part when the OP only said that "lady was walking past his table and her handbag caught on the 1Ds MK3's neck-strap and accidently yanked it down"

and yes, camera that is sitting on the ledge of a table with the strap just hanging there is exposed in my book and that is just asking for trouble.

Did you not read the OP's post? The woman wasn't swinging her bag around. The camera strap was hanging over the edge and her bag caught it. Learn to read!

Learn to read yourself ;) It doesn't say in the OP's post that the strap was hanging over the edge of the table.

Everyone is making a lot of assumptions here ...

i didn't know having something caught on a strap implied that the strap was hanging over the edge.

Haha, I love how the story keeps changing. Just wait a few more pages until the story changes to her stealing his 1DS III...

I blame your friend more than the woman. He must have had the camera on the edge of the table with the strap hanging over the edge in a crowded area. Sounds pretty careless for knowing the value. If this wasn't the case how did the woman's purse snag it.

As far as regular home owners policies, I don't believe they cover things away from the home. You can get a separate rider on your policy to cover it anywhere, for practically anything.

And it really sucks that as a society when anything happens the first thing a lot of people thing of is "Take them to court and sue them". And that lawyers take every case like this, and the courts allow them. SAD :(

x3

Sorry this happened but I think it's a bit out of line to want to sue the woman because your friend wasn't more careful about the way he stored his gear. Yeah, she should have been more appologetic about knocking it to the floor but as others have said, accidents happen. I really doubt she intentially knocked into it to have it fall on the floor.

Well in cases like this you have use a BRAIN. For instance, if the strap was laying on table flat, the lady would have had to DRAG her purse across the actual table. Highly doubt that took place, considering the height of the average lady, and the way they walk carrying a purse. A neckstrap hanging over the table makes more sense and would explain how the BAG easily grabbed on to the strap pulling it down.
