oh god no, that would add hours to the already tedious task of processing photos. lol

I sort the images by day in folders named xx-xx-xxx and put those in the appropriately named year folder.

I just leave them. They end up in named folders.

This one.

Once I have to deal with clients- I rename everything. So if I'm doing Tina and Tony's wedding (props to anyone who gets that reference) I will name the files TTWed001 and so on. So when it comes time to make prints they can say "2 x 4x6 of 001".

Sames for me. The way I see it,why bother? Not like I have 9999 files in one folder so there are never any overlaps. Whatever works for ya I guess

Downloader Pro, by Breeze systems. It does what most batch renamers do, and you can put your own *very* custom string in that will separate files out into any combination of Camera body, month, day year, etc. that you choose.

Yes, Downloader Pro is the boss.

I don't see how anyone can have a sensible data management system over the long haul without some kind of file renaming, and file renaming is difficult unless one has software that does it automatically according to the management scheme one has chosen.

I've never shot 10k in a day, so import from LR2 is all i use. Automatically puts it in YYYY/"month name"/DD folder structure, so raws stay where they belong. Even shooting two bodies, no worries since one body is IMG (friend's), one is _MG (old XT) and two mkiiis with XXX_ type lables (one mine, one friend's, friend's has initials, i have first three letters of my name)

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

It would dive me nuts to leave my files in the original names -- Any time I export a file for any reason I'd have to bother with names, and they would all end up lost in the InterWeb -- like tears in the rain...

Always. I have three cameras in the house that see regular use, and another that sees occasional use. Everything gets imported and renamed immediately with Shooter's Initials_YYMMDD_Image #. Helps me keep straight which shots were taken by which person and when at a glance -- something from me today would be DBB_090223_1234.CR2. Something from my son might be BCB_090223_1234.JPG (he's nine, and his camera doesn't handle RAW, but does have his own LR catalog  ).

Much the same here but even though the family have two G9's each has different owners and this is scanned upon input into IMatch and assigned to the Photographer category ie Photographer>Tracey Carlill for the wife and Photographer>Aaron Carlill for my son.

I haven't in the past, but I just hit 10,000 on the 5D and I'm wondering what to do now. ;)

I'm about to hit 10,000 on my 40D as well. :(

Is there a simple way of doing this?

I, too, use multiple cameras (I have a total of five) and have DownloaderPro set to identify each camera in the file name. To avoid the issue of duplicate image numbers, I have DLPro set to include the camera folder number in the file name as well. What I end up with is a file name something like this: IMG_100-0001-40D. My images keep this number unless they are being submitted to the newspaper I string for. Then they get renamed upon export from Lightroom.

Not renaming images would make it a hell to find anything in my workflow. Surprised the majority doesn't rename...

I use Image Ingester, and rename upon import, while also 'basic' IPTC is added.

Naming scheme: rhd_YYYMMDD_Abrev_xxxx.CR2

Where "Abrev" is a short description of the subject of the shoot.

All images are then catalogued in iView Media Pro, and more specific IPTC is added.
Basically the naming recommended in the DAM Book: Click (external link)

Also, all the files can be batch renamed through the command prompt using old the old fashion rename command and using wild cards.

Very easy...

nope never. They keep their date name and image number and then go into monthly folders. Import through LR then even if I move them to one of my 3 external hard drives, I know how to find them by their date name.

In this case I usually use this duplicate pictures finder (external link). It has many functions and allows to manage files names, remove unnecessary garbage and monitor sizes of files and folders...
