I know this picture is bright and the focus is off a little, I'm not asking for critiqueing of the actual photo itself but problems i have with lighting/shadowing and how to postprocess it... no flash used here, just a window off to his left and a lamp out in front off to his right.. the window apparently gave alot more light and he has a huge shadow behind him and also his belly's almost white! I figure i can at least fix his belly somewhat in post processing or something, but what do i do about the shadowing on the wall?? I tried to put this into pse and pick the background so i could at least try to get a color over it, but i can never seem to layer him right, How do i pick out my son and seperate him from his background as well as you all do?? and how do i get rid of those shadows or do they need to be gone??? I understand my focus is off in this picture too, but let me tell you he is one active 3 yr old and not about to pose.. this is his typical self- one finger in mouth and totally ignoring you on purpose or else he just makes crazy faces at you and runs away... This is the color of my wall, he just about disappears into it and since ive only owned a camera for 3 days now i do not own any photography backdrops, etc.. so i have to make do with what i have and I'd love to just make the background a different color if anything..

Thanks for any help or if you wanna give a stab at this, please do and then let me know what you did!!!
Becky

When I need to put someone close to the wall and want to light without shadow I either bounce flash off the ceiling or have the flash on a bracket which sits above the camera & can swivel for portrait mode (Stroboframe is the make I use). In both cases the light is coming from above so any shadows are out of sight of the camera. On camera flash is also very practical if you are chasing a sprog around!

To achieve the same effect using natural light is not going to be very easy with a toddler moving around a lot. You could put a large white reflector on the opposite side to the window to lighten the shadows, or perhaps PP them out using dodging tools.

Hope this helps,

Phil

ahh.. thanks! i actually will be getting an external flash very soon!!!! That's all i've been hearing is how an external flash bouncing light should help (Except that i have a wooden brown ceiling, lol) so i'll have to bounce it off of walls i guess for now... I didn't think about dodging it out of the pic.. i kept thinking of the clone tool or something, but i just can't get it to pick out my son's body with the selection tools right.. is there an easy tool i am missing to make his body a seperate layer from the wall??

Making an accurate selection in PS takes time. I used the pen too to do this, and did it quickly so it could be better. It's somewhat difficult to learn the pen tool but very worthwhile to master.

Okay so you selected him very carefully by going around his body with the selection tools... got that part! but how the heck did you get the coloring from the left to go to the right.. i see your how it says layer 1 on the right there and how the side you are going to put that in is blocked off but how did you actually do that? i have never done that before! and its definitely something that would be easier then sitting there with the cloning tool and trying to do!

Select two colors from the existing background, then use the gradient tool on the layer beneath.

Very quick job .... extracted subject from background using magic wand. Inserted new background. Modified edges a bit. Also adj the subject using curves.

There are several ways to "extract" a subject from the background. There are plugings like "KnockOut" you can purchase or you can use Photoshops "ExtractPlus" plugin. CS4 doesn't load this plugin automatically and you may have to download free from the adobe website.

Darn.. i couldn't get figure out the gradient thing at all, it just made my background white for some reason.. but i am determined to play with it now til i get it cause that would help with pictures in the future.. so here's what i was able to come up with... i too could probably be a little neater with my choosing of jacob but i didn't care to sit down and pick him out forever as i am not planning on printing this one anyway... alrighty here's what i came up with...
