David, Jon - superb shots! David, yours makes me wish I were out of this snowy place right now.

Yea me too. Its hard to believe that when I took that Jan 2008, it was 70 degrees out. Think, shorts and a t-shirt. Hawaii is beautiful.

it was the 70-200 F4IS I believe. I was inside at an audubon rescue seminar...they let me come right up to the birds to shoot.

hahah. Too funny. With that sort of IQ I was assuming it was the 5D 85L combo.
Good lord, makes me wanna trade my 70-200 2.8 IS for an F4 version!

A while ago I asked in this thread if I should buy a 85mm f1.8 for my 5d. There was only recommendations. So I bought a used one. It was back focussing. I almost lost my desire for photography as my other lenses are just too heavy to walk around with and I am only interested in portrait right now. I send the 85mm to Canon service in Calgary for repair. I haven't heard anything so far. I went to the local store last week to buy a new 85mm. Guess what? The brand new 85mm was also back focussing on my 5D. I asked for another (50D) body. It was still back focussing. I thought it is maybe me. I gave them to the sales guy. He confirmed that the brand new 85mm was back focussing.

I am just wondering if that is normal with Canon lenses? I know this is a question about lenses, but I would like to know the experience of the 5D owners about it. I don't care about xxD and 1D users's experience.

Cheers,
The Eye

I had an 85 1.8 and it was perfect. My 85L II is the most accurate focusing lens I own, on both the 5D and 1D3 it never misses. Either you got unlucky, or maybe you need to look at your own shooting technique more closely - test on a tripod to make sure its not you, because a lot of people don't have good technique when it comes to working with very narrow depth of field.

^ I can honestly say (knocking on wood) that I have never experienced "back focusing" on any of my lenses when they're mounted on my 5D... Perhaps it's just one of those unique occurances, TE... Hopefully when you get your 85 1.8 back from CPS, it'll be fine and you won't have to speculate any longer... Let us know how things transpire...

the only two lenses I had trouble with were 1 copy of the 24-70 and 3 copies of the 100-400. I had an 85 1.8 that was just fine. I think sometimes batches can have problems...but I don't know for sure...just a supposition.

Only my siggy back-focused, but that was quickly fixed by Sigma.

Perry, I think I am just unlucky. I tried it on tripod first, before I sent the lens to service. I shoot with my 70-200mm 2.8 really sharp photos in hand, but it is just 3 pounds heavy.

Airbutchie, I just hope you are right.

Permagrin, I haven't used my 24-70mm very often, but it is not as sharp as my 70-200mm lens.

my first copy (either front or back focused...I can't remember now). My second copy I bought from a local store and tried 3 different ones (I lined up batteries on the counter and tested them in the store ) til I found one that was fine. It turned out to be a very sharp lens and we still have it (husband's bag now). But it's another one that people have QC issues with.

I didn't enjoy my 70-200 2.8 as well as the F4IS. The 2.8 was non-IS and it was sharp but heavy (it was the first lens I bought when I switched back to dslr) for me at the time.

Mr. Clean, the F4IS is still in the house too. It's just that good. The owl shot was at 1/40th...the combination of the (3rd generation?) IS, the light weight and sharpness/IQ made me a fan of it. The bokeh is lovely with it but you have to be pretty close to your subject to get it that OOF. However if you need 2.8 it obviously wouldn't work...but I wish canon would have updated their 2.8 when they did the F4IS.

From what I understand, back focusing is not something proper to a lens. It's a combination between a lens and a body which creates back focusing, which means that a lens may back focuses on one body and be just fine with another body. Recent 1D bodies have a function which allows to adjust the position of the sensor to correct back focus issues. And this can be done for each lens and stored by the body, so the sensor changes automatically it's position when you change lens.
Too bad that such function doesn't exist with the 5D. I think this is the ultimate solution for back focus problems.
This reminds me several ages ago when I had to adjust the head position of my tape reader to get the clearer sound from a tape...

Grats.

Have you considered selling the xsi, the two ef-s lenses and the siggy? That would get you some nice EF glass for the 5D.

Man this thread moves fast. :)

I will probably sell it. I have to walk around with the 5D for a while, and see if I'm going to be happy with it as my only body weight-wise. The XSi is just so easy to carry around, even when I'm not going somewhere specifically to shoot.

If I did go to sell it (and lenses), I'm not sure where I'd sell. I don't have any feedback here nor on eBay, and I doubt someone's going to just trust me to ship expensive items, even though I'm very trustworthy. Maybe craigslist for a face-to-face.

My cousin also might be interested. I just decided today to order the 5D, so I haven't asked him yet. :)
