Tiffany and Ivan(?) your photos are awesome! Impressive, to say the least.

#Deleted the photos. I guess they were a bit too touristy to interest anyone here. :)

Here's one. Click here. (external link)

And here's the google results. Click Here. (external link)

For me, it's taken lots of practice to get it right. I've only used speedlights, for most models shoots, cause that's all I had. It took a lot of patience/research/testing to get used to it, and there's still certain situations where it's a bit tough. I've learned a lot about light, through reading, and 'looking' at pictures, reading the light and where it is coming from, etc. I'm still not perfect, but, that's always the challenge, is it not? :)

Thanks. I somehow missed that one on Strobist.

I had googled for it previously...it just seems so seat-of-the-pants, with a model (or moderately willing family member) sitting there while I futz around getting the light right, I had hoped there was a more concrete "take camera reading, under-expose by 2/3 stop, start flash at 1/8 and work your way up" kind of rule...but I see that there really isn't.

Time for some experimenting when I get home.

Thanks! :)

Oh yeah... there's no rule at all. It's all free game. You'll be doing a lot of chimping. But once you start understanding how your flash works as well as balancing iso, ss, and aperture, it'll become a lot easier.

He is a rescue that is used for educational purposes.
That's the only reason I could get this close.

I keep having to remind myself that shutter speed doesn't matter much with flash (unless you exceed sync speed), and is used to control ambient only.

So much to learn! I have a good feeling about off-camera flash though. I'll use the flash to learn a bit, and then hopefully graduate to some studio lights when I find the time to set up my studio. Getting the Cybersyncs was the first step; now I'm waiting for a light stand and umbrella.

Gorgeous hawk shot, max. :D

Brett...

I like to meter for the ambient then set the flash to like 1/8 th power for fill. I am usually with in one stop or so from there for proper fill.

I was about 5 feet behind.

Thanks. We had a blast. Other than sensor snot I am loving the 5D.

Love my 24-70 on it. My 17-40 use to be my favorite lens...but the 24 on the 5D is awesome....

Agreed Jon, really nice shots. The wave-crashing one I'd have to print. :)

I just have to feel out the flash thing. I was just taking pics of my cat (my only willing subject right now) and the first few at 1/200 and f/4, with the flash at 1/8, and they were blown completely out. I had to get to 1/64 flash power to get a good histogram exposure. But, it's a living room that's quite brightly lit at the moment.

I'll learn this thing yet. :)

Brett...

Thanks.

I assume you are using your camera totally on manual?

Also...one thing that I failed to mention....but distance of the flash to model will affect this as well.
