bminear - whats on the top left of the picture ????

*edit*
I think you should crop a little tighter from the cameras left . I see the stand .. :p

also I can be way off as like I stated many times I don't know anything about lighting .. but if I was taking that picture I would of have moved the light from the camera left more to the camera .. the angle the light is coming from is not working at all for me because it is lighting the back of the ear/neck and its just to strong (so it looks out of place) .. also if you notice the shadows on the floor - well IMHO the lighting just clashes not only because the floor shadows but also because the face is well light to begging with and then its just off balanced by the flash ..

Like I said .. don't even go by what I'm saying .. its just what I'm noticing and what I would of have done different .. I have no experience in lighting and my playing time with them has been a two time outing ....

yea i understand what you are saying. honestly this shoot was just a chance to play with my lights a bit, and i know what you are saying about the position of the light. i was shooting from a different angle, and just had him turn for this one shot to see what the light would look like from that angle, and i liked it. it may break every rule there is, im not usually a "by-the-book" kind of guy. but let me see if i can explain a bit of what i was trying to accomplish:

i was using the sun as a nice hair light from the right to get him to pop off the background (the branches growing out of his head that would be way more noticeable without the light) and i was trying to get the opposite flash (that you don't like) to even out the light from the sun, and make him pop off the background even more. it is a little too powerful, i agree there! and then the last flash by the camera as a fill for the harsh shadows. it was pretty much an experiment with lighting and i like how it turned out. although i will agree it is not "conventional" by any means. thanks for the tips though! i always appreciate some good c&c!!

oh! and the stand........oops. haha. thats what happens when you edit quickly trying to rush before statistics class.

I met up with MDJAK today. Cool guy for someone that shoots Nikon :). That D3 is a pretty sweet machine. I let him borrow a couple of my hitech ND filters so that he can get bitten by the landscape bug

I prefer my Singh-Ray grad ND, but that's mainly because it's slightly longer than the hi-tech and I prefer to hand hold them in front of my lens. I also like the carrying case that it comes with compared to the plastic things for the hitechs. That being said, both produce the same image. Neither have a color cast, so for the price, hitechs are hard to beat.

hmmmm never thought about just holding them instead of buying a holder........ lol. Do you just set up your shot on a tripod and use a remote while holding the filter? or do you handhold the camera and filter at the same time? (that seems like it would be tough)

I'm really trying to decide if I "need" to upgrade from my 40D to a 5D...Why can't they be a little closer in price?

I shoot automotive mostly, and I'm beginning to get paid some to do just that. I also use my camera for my own personal shooting in just about any setting I can. I've even shot a Purdue men's game from down on the court after I managed to get a press pass.

My lens lineup will be a 17-40L and a 50L after I sell off a couple others.

Pros
-Full frame, awesome DOF, etc, etc

Cons
-$500 to upgrade,
-50mm will be my longest lens, which is kind of short now on the crop.
-Will lose the 6.5 fps, but I don't usually use it.

I'm looking at one on Ebay right now for $1300 after cash back. Not the best deal, but the body is in awesome shape.

Anybody have input for me? Opinions? Sway me in either direction please...This fence is uncomfortable.

Sorry if you guys hate this type of post in here...

Nice. This looks familiar to me though...

Thanks Geno DM. It's fresh from this weekend.
I also posted it in the SMWYG photos Only thread for March.
Maybe that's where you also saw it.

I think it is completely worth it. I looked at the 40Ds when I wanted an upgrade from my xti and liked them, but the 5D just blew me away. The VF and the depth of field are fantastic. There is also just something special about 5D files. they have a certain "pop" that I just love. If you dont need the extra reach I think a 5D is the perfect camera for you.

Also are you getting rid of your 200L? because it would be a great lens on the 5D. I am thinking about getting rid of my 70-200 for one. :D

I would have to. I just can't afford to keep everything. The 200L is for sale now, and the 17-55 would go after I shoot a family member's wedding next month.

I forgot about the viewfinder in my first post. That's another one of the main reasons for the upgrade.

I did read your post, that's what made me think about the tripod but I guess in the back of my mind I thought WTF, it won't blow over an empty tripod. At least you made me think about taking the camera off!

See, I like the colour version better. Now the scarf looks right to me. One thing I've learned about POTN (or any other forum) is you will get two opinions on everything. Go with what floats your boat! :)

At least the camera wasn't on the dang thing. That must have been some serious wind, or your tripod is very light (I'm guessing the latter). :D

I like the color version too, although it makes me want to see more of her face too, and she still looks just pasted on the BG...not sure why. I think it's because my eye expects the waves closer to the bottom of the frame to be more in-focus than they are. It's a sweet shot either way.

I liked Helena's shots too; I just don't comment that often on shots in this thread because what I have to offer is never as nice.

Just make sure you NEVER... I mean NEVER play with a 1D. Once you hold one, you'll never want to let it go... EVER... :)

The 5D is great though. The short 2 months I had it, I actually used it more than my 1D Mark III. I think the perfect setup is 1D / 5D. Ask Perry!!! ;)

Losing lenses to gain a body is never a great idea, IMO. And 50mm is "normal" on a 5D...actually a lot wider than you might think, if you've never shot FF. Pin your 17-55 at 31mm and decide if you can live with it.

And losing a 200L and a 17-55? Ouch. As much as I love the 5D, I'd have to say I wouldn't do it.

If you do anyway, I can highly recommend the Tamron 28-75 2.8 as a budget FF normal zoom. I say it all the time on these forums, but I love mine. :)

I 'll make it real easy for you... don't sell that 200mm, it's a great lens.
Sell everything else.
Does that help?
If your 50mm is coming up short on the 40D, it's going to get shorter.
