Losing lenses to gain a body is never a great idea, IMO. And 50mm is "normal" on a 5D...actually a lot wider than you might think, if you've never shot FF. Pin your 17-55 at 31mm and decide if you can live with it.

And losing a 200L and a 17-55? Ouch. As much as I love the 5D, I'd have to say I wouldn't do it.

If you do anyway, I can highly recommend the Tamron 28-75 2.8 as a budget FF normal zoom. I say it all the time on these forums, but I love mine. :)

Well, let me explain. I originally shot the 17-55 and the 200L on my 40D. The 200 is too long for what I do. The 17-55 was great, but coming from a 28 1.8 and 100 2.0 before that, it left something to be desired. I don't really need the IS either.

That lead me to what I have now...the 17-40L and 50L. The plan was to get them and then sell the 17-55 and 200L. I just haven't done it yet, because the 17-55 will be used for a wedding next month.

I 'll make it real easy for you... don't sell that 200mm, it's a great lens.
Sell everything else.
Does that help?
If your 50mm is coming up short on the 40D, it's going to get shorter.
_______________

I do like the images from the 200, it just doesn't get used.

The 50mm hasn't come up short yet. I could get by with the 17-55 only on my 40D. I just don't know if I can get by with 50 as my longest on FF.

SO, the summary of this all is, the 17-55 IS and the 200 are going regardless, whether I'm on a 40D or FF. I'm not giving up lenses to buy a 5D. I'm giving up lenses for other lenses...

You could get an idea of what the 50mm would be like on a FF with the 17-55 on your 40D.
Zoom it to a little past 30mm and take a look. That would approximate a 50mm on a 5D, of course without the larger viewfinder.
Might give you a viewpoint for a decision.

And the 200L will seem like 125mm on the 5D, close to the 100mm you liked on the 40D.

I know, but I'm having trouble justifying the 200L now, without spending $500 to upgrade. If I go FF, I would use it more, but I wouldn't be able to afford to keep it.

I get it, and only you know what's going to be right for what you shoot.

I just lust after a 200L. I know the 35/50/85Ls are where it's at in this thread, but I'd probably get more use out of 50/135/200L. :)

I find I like the longer focal lengths much more on FF because.... well they aren't as "long" however 50mm is relatively wide on the 5D. you can always buy a 85mm or 100mm though for a bargain price (IMO) in the forsale threads if you think you need something longer. I guarantee you you will enjoy the 50L more on the 5D than you do on the 40D. :p I know im jealous. Im "yearning" for a 35L or a 50L. (im glad the 35Ls aren't in stock hehe)

I think I agree, although it would take awhile on FF before I knew for sure. The 35 would be too wide for the majority of my automotive shots on FF. It's just too bad the 50Ls have the design limitations they do.

I actually agree with you. I would LOVE!!! a 35/50/85L set up but i am dreaming of 35/135/200L trio :D I just think it would be the most useful for me.

this may be a long shot but have you thought about selling the 50L??? I know its a great lens and I really want one but if your on a very limited budget you might be able to use another zoom?? just a thought for more practicality. :D

BLASPHEMY!

Kidding. But I'd have to at least try it on the 5D (never have) before I'd even think about selling it.

Are you a competitive shooter Michael? I notice a competition Glock in your flickr.

I just got it! I haven't even used it on a real shoot yet...

I would consider it if I went FF. I wouldn't buy a zoom though. In that situation, I would probably still sell the 200L, and I would grab a 50 1.4 and a 135L.

Being that lenses are so hard to find now, I don't want to rush into that option.

On another note, if I could find a used 85L for a decent enough price, I could certainly live with a 5D, 17-40L, 85L combo.

Yes, I'm a fellow shooter. I've been shooting guns since I was about 8 years old. Never competitively though. It just caught my eye because I have a couple Glocks, a 19 for range/home-protection, and a 27 is my carry at my shop, plus five Colts I inherited from my dad. :D
