Hello 5D owners. Just wanted to ask: has anyone ever switched from a crop to FF and is it really worth the extra cash? ;)

I 'd like to switch for the DOF and to be able to use my 70-200 2.8 L more and ofcourse the viewfinder. Don't have the money for 5dmk2. So only option is the 5D
But I'm a bit held back because of the lack of some features the 40D has and the 5D doesn't...

What to do? ;)

I made that exact switch. You won't miss the extra features. Most of them are just gimmicks anyways.

Dog photo here:

Excellent exposure but I have a nit. Not sure if you did it on purpose (which then makes it OK :)) but you have the doggie in the middle of the frame with the eyes directly on the centerline. If you wanted to do that, maybe try portrait orientation.

Manish,

I redid the last set of the young woman and fiddled the white balance. You were right, it was off. Thanks for pointing it out, sometimes I get to close to notice things.

I went from a 40D to the 5D mark I. Haven't looked back a single time. Try borrowing a 5D and take a shot at ISO 1250. Compare it to ISO 800 from your crop cam and we'll be seing you in the 5D Classic Owners Club soon :)

...oh, colors, contrast, subject separation and overall POP are pretty good selling points as well. Pair it up with some primes and get ready to be blown away.

Hi there,

Just to add my 2 cents worth...I wouldn't so much 'switch' as add to -

I shoot with both FF and Crop. I couldn't imagine having to do with either or and it saves me a bomb in glass!

The 50mm 1.4 on the 5D is an 85mm on the 1.6x crop bodies and the 70-200 with a 1.4xTC becomes a 448mm f/4 on the crop and the 135mm is a 216mm f/2! I use a 17-40mm on the 5D for wide stuff.

In short, they are both great tools for different jobs - the Crop bodies (40 & 50D) are great for sports, action, wildlife, reportage, astrophotography, etc.. whilst the 5D is a bit more sedate in it's features and ease of use. Great for landscapes, portraits...anything slow.

Whilst I don't really miss the features of the 40D's when shooting with the 5D, it's the usual irritants that get to me more - ie the cr@p screen on the 5D, the lack of anti-dust feature, the slow FPS - none of these detract from the pleasure of using the 5D or from the absolutely stunning images it produces- which will always be worth buying one for.

If I were you, if your not too heavilly invested in EFS glass, i'd save up and get a 5D to complement your crop camera.

Regards, Rod

You've seen them! Here's a couple that I've redone though. She's on MM but she found me another way. Funny thing, she's another one that knows my step-son. I was sitting in my office the day after I sent her the photos and he comes running in shocked after seeing my email address on her Facebook profile photo.

Posted the "colour" version of this but finally got around to doing it in Monochrome.

+1

That's what I did, thinking that one would be the backup for the other...and I've found that they both have their own character and uses.

OK, I'm thinking that if I ever shoot another Grad I'm going to charge by the zit. :-)

How do you deal with the CA on the edge of the white collar? Is it a big problem?

Love using the sun for shots. The manual controls leave a lot to be desired but you can't beat the power!

True. But learning those manual controls, and making yourself it's master is so important!

Geno, that monochrome version is top notch. The second in the series is right on the money, as well. First one is a bit warm, still.

As for dealing with CA...I just use DPP if/when I have to, seems to take care of 'most' of it, and the rest can be done by desaturating certain colors in LR, PS, etc. As for it being a large problem, I don't think so, unless it's going to be printed rather large, in size. ;)
