If you're only going to get one Canon flash, I'd recommend the 580ex v1 or v2. It's just an awesome flash for when you're shooting on camera

+1 and it can serve as a master if you get more, and unlike the 430EX it has a bloody PC sync cord. I have the 430EX because it was cheaper :p, but I wouldn't recommend it.

Well, I have both. The 580ex2 is larger than the 430ex. The 430 is my travel flash for when I just want fill. 580 is my main flash for any sort of longer shooting. ST-E2 with both of them as slaves when I'm trying to do a controlled environment.

Name is Peter and here is my gear:
Canon 5D II, Canon 7D, Canon 40D

L, Canon 85 f/1.2L II, Canon 70-200 f/2.8L IS II, Canon 500 f/4L IS

Rikan, have you checked out http://strobist.blogspot.com/ (external link) ? It is one of the best sites for help on lighting setups/how to's. And I know a lot of people on here have and use the cactus triggers without problem, but I would consider just paying the extra money the first time and buy the cybersyncs. My cactus triggers came and didn't work at all from the get go. I should have just bought once cried once. Good luck! And I like that first shot a lot.

Not to step over anyone, but if you're not looking for portability, the Calumet Genesis kits (external link) (the 200 or 400 kits) offer pretty much the best value you can get in bargain lighting. They have their idiosyncrasies, but they are a nice value and come with everything you need. They receive nice reviews pretty much everywhere.

what's the difference between buying an alienbees flash vs say a calumet flash? other than the fact of cost difference and flash adjustability, is there any real difference?

Sorry; I must have missed that. :)

I've been considering the Calumet kits. I have to get my lens/body situation in order first. Probably going to sell the XSi. I just can't bring myself to take it out anymore. I just worry that there'll be a travel situation where I don't want to lug the heavier gear--but then I'm going to be constantly wishing I'd brought the 5D. :)

The 5D IS my travel camera . It's like carrying a cell phone compared to the Mark 3 + 400L.

Been out for a while, but Perry, that series you've been posting is fine stuff! You've been really nailing you lighting! And, of course, it helps to have friends who make such shoots so fun!

Keep up the good work!

Thanks Tony! She's the only friend I shoot really, but she's fantastic - my muse (and evidently Jay's too), the rest are all just folk in the industry. I'm shooting two models with two stylists on Sunday and covering fashion week next week....f*** it's gonna be a tiring week.

So, is photography a career while you're studying or is it a hobby?
