I purchased a Sekonic L-358 Flash meter about 18 months ago, and I haven't used it in a while.

Today I took it out of the box to make sure the battery was good to go for a shoot this weekend, and noticed that when the green backlight is on, the unit emits a barely audible, but noticeable high pitched hum. When the backlight turns off, the hum goes away. I never noticed this before, but then again, it's been a long time since I used it.

In order to hear the hum, you need to hold the unit up near your face (which I probably would do when metering a model). Just wondering, does anybody else's do the same? Could this be a sign of a potential problem?

Thanks!

Mine emits a faint tone that I can hear with the meter at my ear when it's turned on.

Interesting, I just tested mine and I'm also getting the hum sound when the green backlight is on.
I think it's normal.

Thanks guys!!! You have calmed my OCD... for now ;)

I've watched a few Superman movies and TV shows, so I think the logical answer is that the backlight is powered by kryptonite (it usually emits a similar hum).
:)

I could try, but it would be pretty meaningless; My ears are so bad, I almost have to press my ear against the 580EX to check if it's charging
