wondering, should i sell the 30mm too and get a used 24-70L as my only lens? i think the f/2.8 would be good enough inside, what do you think?

Are you insane?

The two lenses to build around, IMO, for APS-C, are the 30 f1.4 and/or 17-55 f2.8 IS. So, no don't sell the 30.

i will disagree a little bit and say the 24-70 while not 100% usable is passable indoors, and under the right circumstances is fine, even without flash. is it as good as a prime, of course not, but it's a matter of compromise. my 24-70 is on my camera 90% of the time. if i need to go out of town and only want to bring one lens, i feel comfortable that the 24-70 will do the job, whereas with the 30F1.4 i'm always a little hesitant.

if cost is an issue look at the options from sigma or tamron, the results look comparable if the build quality is a step down.

Agree 100%. If you're gonna shoot with a 1.6x cropbody for anything other than financial reasons or the pixel density and crop factor for birding, for heaven's sake get these two lenses!

haha. okay, maybe this settles it. i'll hold off on selling the 30. i still think i'll sell the 85 since i dont use it. i won't have enough for a 17-55, so maybe i'll try a Tammy 17-50 or 28-75.

Tim, maybe a used 17-55 f2.8 IS? If not, check out the Tamron 17-50 f2.8.

I have a 40d, and I own the 24-70 and the 18-55 f3,5 IS. I never use the 18-55. I have it as a backup,.I like the longer reach and f2,8 of the 24-70. It all depends on what you shoot. If you don't have a photography-niche maybe get the 24-105, that's even more allround. You can use bounce flash to fill-in shadows when you're inside. Because even f2,8 isn't enough to properly expose with indoor home lighting, unless you have a 5d MII or something.

Allow me to slightly disagree on which lens to keep. On the crop body the 85MM f/1.8 EF coupled with the 17-55MM f/2.8 EF-S IS is a killer line up. When doing weddings or group events these are my two standard combos...17-55 on the 30D and the 85 on the DRebel.

Jim -- I keep the Leica D-Lux 7 in the Glove Box just in case!
