70-200 2.8 UO date code

I have found a 70-200 2.8 that is about 9yrs. old.
Seller wants $800.

I know this is a good price for this lens, but 9yrs is a long time not to have dropped it or have another incident with it.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Ask for quality, close-up pictures of the lens barrel and the glass (if they have this lens, chances are they have other good lenses that can take sharp pictures). Also, if possible, ask them to put it up on eBay for you to buy. That way, you will have two layers of security in eBay itself and PayPal, in case something is wrong with it.

Unless you know the seller personally, I would insist on seeing the original bill of sale for the lens to prove that it has been owned only by the seller. Also, arrange for you to handle the lens and take a few test shots that you can analyse before completing the deal.

yeah, that ebay advice is good advice. but as a seller, that is the reason i will never do business via an ebay or paypal transaction again (see my FS Canon XT thread).

If I would been the seller, I think I wouldn't sell it via Ebay

Otherwise if the glass and barrel are in good shape would this lens be a good purchase?

Does anything really wear out in the lens?

I have a UE date coded 85L.
That puts it around 1991.
No problems at all.

So really up to how the lens was treated by the owner(s).

I think my 70-200 f2.8 is OP date code (or something that old) and it works great. Some paint scratches but optically it's awesome.

IF you will pay the cost that ebay will charge them then sure, ask them to put it up, otherwise I wouldnt expect them to do it.

Its a great lens with quality parts, ask for a 30 day warenty against AF failure or other electrical failure. Though for that price I doubt they will do that, thats why the price is low, because of the "JUST IN CASE IT HAPPENS" factor.

thanks nicksan that info makes me feel a little better.
Basically I need to decide if the lens was well taken care of.
Other than that, the internals and such should hold up for many years.
