A pro photographer friend of mine was driving to work this morning and he called me from his car and told me to go outside and look at the clouds. There was this weird boundary layer and it was rippled, almost like waves in a sea. Very neat looking.

One is real, the other is enhanced - or fake. ;) I like the second one too, but I could not pass that off as the real thing.

Even number 1 doesn't look real. Amazing! Nice picture too. I'll bet that if you had that printed as a poster most people would not believe it was photograph. Did it result in any kind of storm?

Yes, actually it rained so hard with such violent lightening that I had to close my office for a two hours because all of our machines were turned off. Some places they had power outages due to lightening. Even the first image is "edited". It had been underexposed, so I upped the exposure to +1/2 in the RAW converter and added local contrast enhancement. The colors and tones are pretty much true to the original.

Good grief, it's very hard to imagine either being real. Very amazing photos.

Here is another one taken portrait with the 17-40L. The clouds seemed to go on and and on, and they seemed to be rolling over you. It was a strange sight to look ahead and see these strange clouds. It was even stranger to see the pattern continuing as you looked up as well. Weird.
