I'm adding a 64 Bit Vista box to my shop and am wondering what people are using for font management under Vista?

I've been happy using the very old Adobe Type Manager for years and years and of course Adobe went out of that business a long time ago. I read somewhere that you can hack ATM somehow into Vista and it works, but I'm interested if people are happy with something more current and designed to be used with Vista 64 bit.

I'm wondering if Extensis Suitcase is the best choice? I've used Extensis Portfolio for ten or twelve years and although the products seem to work very well, I dislike how they gouge you with their upgrade pricing.

Any thoughts and recommendations are appreciated.

Yes. Thanks, I see that now. Another hurdle.

Thanks Bobster. Are you saying that Suitcase, as it is, will allow you to organize fonts into folders that you can install and un-install? It handles Type one, True Type and Open all together? Thanks.

you put all your fonts, in my case 9,564 of them into suitcase (i only have my system fonts in the fonts folder)

it will then keep track of them for you, you double click on a font, it will then activate that font until you restart or deactivate it..

it allows you to have folders that you can drag fonts into (so if you use a certain style of font for say wedding books) you just activate that folder of fonts :)

yes true type, open type and postscript typefaces can all be controlled through suitcase

Thanks Bobster, it looks like Suitcase is the way I'll have to go for now. When you say, "it will then keep track of them for you, you double click on a font, it will then activate that font until you restart or deactivate it." Does this mean you have to activate your selected fonts every time you reboot? Yikes!

I've been using FontExpert (external link)since I went 64bit. Works with CS4 quite nicely.

without the plug-in working for CS4, yes, if you're on CS3 or earlier, any fonts will automatically open for you when you open the document..

That sounds like a real pain, especially when working with a layout program like InDesign. Thanks for the information.

NO, hold down cntrl or something when you activate the font and instead of 'temporary turn on' it stays on permanently. (i use suitcase X1 on a mac and if i hold down "apple" and turn on the font it stays permanently on - the active like becomes green instead of orange.)

the latest version of suitcase "Fusion 2" does support plugins for CS4 - but i don't know if it does on the PC or not.

But every document could have its own folder. Yikes again!

Thanks M_ark. That sounds promising.
