Ok so I bought a B+W Circular Polarizer for $129.00 at my local camera shop today, but after thumbing through some threads on here about them, I'm not sure on whether I got the right one.

I'm pretty sure this is the one I got:

I've been reading specifically about these "MRC" filters and how buying cheap single coat filters might degrade your images.

B+W has another one that is described as "MC" here:

Why is the MC one less expensive than the one that's not MC?!? That doesn't make sense to me.

So can someone tell me: what's the deal? Is my filter "multi-coated" or not? Do I need to spend for a more expensive one?

Thanks

I admit that is confusing. Checking the link on the one that is "yours", under Specifications it shows NOT being multicoated. B+W actually has three CP filter coatings. The MRC version that you refer to is here:

I would think that a MC filter would be better but not sure why it is cheaper. Maybe you should return yours for a MC version.

Thanks...but the link you posted doesn't work, just comes up BH's main page.

Does the multicoating really make a big difference vs. the regular B+H circular polarizing filter? I would have thought a $129 filter would be pretty good quality?

I have two B&W filters, an older non multicoated one and a new multicoated one. Frankly, I can't tell the difference. I have never had any of the non multicoated problems( reflections etc) with the non mc lens

What are the engravings on your polarizer? B+W usually marks the outer and inner rings with their name, size, diameter, and coating designation (such as 'MRC')...

The MRC (multi-resistant coatings) filters are better than their MC and non-MC counterparts simply because their coatings are superior...better at reducing flare, glare, etc.

Take a look at your filter markings and report back...

BTW...in the future, try this site for great deals on B+W filters: HVSTAR (external link)
