5D MK II LCD Problem anyone?!

5D MK II Users,

I got my 5D MK II a month ago and already had a bunch of prime and zoom lenses. I played around with the camera for a bit, and noticed that after I take a picture and look at my lcd for playback, it would playback the picture for a second and then go black and I'd have to press play again, but the same thing would happen, etc... But then sometimes nothing wrong would happen, it would playback perfectly fine. I also felt that as I brought it closer to me (the camera) to take a closer look at the lcd, it would happen, but I doubt that...

Anyways as is custom with most my new cameras I decided to take them to Canon and get the whole bunch calibrated. And I listed that the lcd would turn off when i press playback or menu even sometimes, I got my camera back and it still does it. The thing is it does it one out of three times... am I missing something or is it really a defect?! Canon found nothing wrong apparently...

Thanks

You need to make sure you left hand doesn't press the DOF button under the lens mount as you review the photos

What is the Review time set to?

I'm surely not pressing the dof button or any button for that matter... the review time is specifically set to Hold.

Not that I don't believe you, but just to be 100% sure (because it sounds like a depth of field button being accidentally pressed). I have read instances where people swear they were not pressing the depth of field button, but turns out they were accidentally. It has to do with the way you hold the camera for review. The button is easy to bump without realizing it. Try setting the camera on a table and reviewing with just one hand - see if it happens again then.

I would go along with this too! It caught me out a few times until I realised what I was doing.

Yeah, and it's really awesome when you have a few speedlights setup and you accidentally press it...gets people's attention anyway. ;)

Ok, I'm really not pressing the dof button, it's like a big chunky button that needs to be pressed pretty obviously, I've had a few canon dslrs before and this never happened... so I'm guessing it's a mechanical problem... is there a sensor near the lcd somewhere so when you approach your eye to the viewfinder, it automatically turns the lcd off so it doesn't interfere with you taking the picture?!

Nicolas, the 5D2 lacks the "nose sensor" that my XSi had.

While I believe you when you say that you're not pressing the DOF button, I must say that I still catch myself pressing it when holding the camera to reveiw photos. The screen blanks out and all the controls freeze for a second or so, while the DOF function is active.

The big chunky button is the lens release. The DOF preview is the little round one underneath the chunky one...

Nicolas the 5D2's DOF button is fairly insidiously easy to accidentally press, so please forgive our scepticism as this has happened a lot to all of us in the past :)
