(something I've wondered myself) In my case, I'll be traveling around China for two weeks and have a large lens that I'll only be using on one day. I want to take that as carry-on with the body and normal lenses when moving from one place to another, but I'm happy for the filters, flash and other stuff to be checked. When I get there, I can re-arrange it to function normally and not have to lug the lot around with me all the time. "Treat every photon with respect" - David Malin.

Yup. You could, if you wanted, use the two compartments as one big compartment.
