And I also just ordered a few Fotodiox adapters. Quite cheap really.

I ordered all my adapaters from them. Their N.A. distribution center is just up in Waukegan (north of Chicago). I usually get their stuff next day after they ship since I'm around Chicago as well.

I've used their standard Nikon-F to EOS adapter with the somewhat large/heavy 80-400 Nikon VR ED on my 20D. Their adapters have held up well. I understand they also sell "Pro"versions of their EOS ones that can take more a beating.

Hey Brett, I've been hunting a 50mm mf as well for my 5D. What I have come across recently is the Yashica ML 50 f/1.4/1.7 lenses are supposed to be very comparable to the Planar's, just much cheaper. I just watched a f/1.7 go unbid at ebay for $47.50 (external link). There is also a f/1.4 (external link) with a buyitnow price of $99. And those go up to about $150. I am going to be watching these a little more to see what they are going for, but they do look promising.
Hope this helps.:)
Jeremy

Hmm. Does anyone else have any experience with the Yashicas? I'll have to hunt up some images and see how they compare to the Planar. I'm seeking that certain microcontrast and DoF falloff that the Planar's do so well.

The fix for lenses that hit 5D's mirror:

Has anybody done this?

Successfully?

I would never have the guts to do that to my camera. Dust on the sensor is bad enough, but filings? shudder

I saw pics back in the film days (80's) with them and they looked superb....

I have a Minolta srT200 and it came with a Rokkor-X PF 1:2 50mm lens. I was thinking of getting a mount for it to fit onto my 40D(and hopefully one day 5D)

Anyone else have this lens? Worth the effort? Also what is the best Minolta to EOS mount?

I read through this whole discussion thread and sample thread and REALLY want to get into MF lenses but damn are some expensive! Was thinking this would be a nice cheap way to get into it since I already have a lens.

unfortunately minolta is about the worst possible mount to try and convert. Not worth it.

Yes, like Canon FD, Minolta lenses require an adapter with a corrective lens so it's not really worth it...

Some Yashica's have a good rep. Do a search for Yashica ML. Minolta 50/2 is not worth converting. Many Minolta lenses are worth the effort, I have converted 4 myself but not that one.

I had a Yashica Auto-Yashinon DS-M 28/2.8 which was great...for the time I used it (indoors, family stuff). Rock solid and sharp as!

I just got a used Contax Zeiss from Adorama and their great!

The LPS around here are a bit overpriced, plus one has mainly junk glass (all the good glass is sold via bidding wars on eBay).

Now I just need to stumble in some yard sales and find really nice glass people don't know about like that guy who got that box of glass(including a 200L 1.8) for like $200!

That depends on the lens. The Minolta Rokkor 58/1.2 is awesome on a 5D or 5D2...requires a mount conversion, but it is well worth it.

Yeah, but his is only the 50/2. Those are pretty common in mounts that don't need adapting.

Hey folks,

Anybody using their manual focus lenses for "street" photography? If anyone does, how do you meter to prevent burned out highlights? Do you set the camera on aperture priority and underexpose by .3 stop, or something? Do you use evaluative metering? Some of these manual focus lenses can cause the meter to overexpose by up to one stop or more at certain f-stops; a bit of a pain. I've been experimenting with taking an initial reading and then setting the camera to that reading and vary shutter speed only if the light changes. I don't like checking the LCD on the street. Anyway, if anybody has any tips to share I'd be very grateful as I'm new to street shooting. Thnx.
