Hello,
I just got a used EOS 20D from KEH in Georgia and they rated the body as LN-. The 20D is perfect without a scratch anywhere on body. Only the slightest brassing on the neck strap mounts. I bought a new SanDisk Extreme III 4GB CF card and formatted it in the camera before taking a test shot. I know that the new card, once formatted in camera, will take on the next sequencially available shot number that is in the camera (next number after previous owner's last shot).
On the 20D's LCD display monitor in playback mode the last shot I took reads 558-5860
I assume that the previous owner took 5859 shots. (KEH took some as well to test camera)
What does the 558 represent?

Thanks!

You can't trust that number at all. A person can make it whatever they want if they chose. It can also pick up numbers from a card that was used in another camera. Only Canon can tell how many shots the camera has and I don't think they'll tell you.

I have a 20D but don't remember the number convention but it seems to me that the 558 should repersent the folder since the 20D dumps 100 pictures per folder. I'd guess it has taken about 45,000 pictures but who knows. Are you sure that last number is 4 digits. As far as I know the camera creates folders for each hundred pictures starting at 101 (I think).

Folders can also be created when using manual reset, or when cards are mixed and matched between cameras, folder names can advance
