I've written a comprehensive review of Noise Ninja 2. It's a 28 page .PDF download that's free to the digital photography community.

If you're considering noise reduction software, I hope this review helps.

I also have similar reviews for Nik Dfine 2 and Noiseware 4

I have plans for several more reviews of noise reduction software. I hope to get Neat Image online soon. That will finish the "Big 4" apps. I will also be looking at Topaz, PictureCooler, Akvis NoiseBuster, etc.

I can't predict when I'll complete the others. I do this as time permits. These reviews are quite comprehensive, so they take a while to prepare. They compete with my tools, tutorials, and videos for my attention.

Comments are welcome.

Enjoy!

Mitch

Good work with that, Mitch! I either forgot, or didn't ever know that you could select parts of an image before doing the noise reduction.

Very nice review. Easier reading than the manual that comes with it. :)

A comment and a question.

I found it interesting the way you "red box" the noise areas. I have always had a tendency to select very small areas of noise, say in a shadow area only. But you incorporate both shadow and highlights in your selection areas.

Question: this quoted from the article:

"Capture sharpening showed no significant evidence of noise reemerging."

Interesting. All reading I have ever done stated that capture sharpening of RAW files should be one of the very first things done when processing them. You are apparently doing so after noise reduction is employed. Is your technique preferable?

The red box areas are not the samples used to generate noise profiles. In fact, they are just Photoshop layers with stroked rectangular marquees. I use them to mark out areas for me to compare as I look at the results from the different tools.

I am starting with individual software reviews. When I finish them, I will tie everything together with a comparative review. So those marquees and the full set of photos will be more important at that stage.

The final stage will be to cut some video of using the tools.

Thanks for the kind comments, folks. :)

Cheers,

Mitch

No, Suller. A crew up on my part today. It's fixed now. Sorry.

Thanks for the review. I'm considering Noise Ninja to clean up some of my 12,800 ISO images. I'm hoping it'll keep me from going to the 5DII :)
