My free (and only) model, Katrin
580EX through brolly camera left, just out of frame at 1/8 power (manual) at same height as her head.
A few tweaks in lightroom.
Shame about the harsh shadow on her nose.

Been watching this thread for a while. Incredible stuff here. Here is a few from the other night. These were shot with 580EXII on 18" high bracket with softbox and 580EXII bare (should have used a umbrella) camera left.

Pure trial and error, I'm an absolute beginner at off camera flash.
I deliberately darkened down the bg with shutter speed, even gaffered up a black bedsheet, as it looked through to a cluttered kitchen area and even bokeh'ed out didn't look very pretty.
Camera settings were ISO200 f4 1/100
It is deliberately slightly underexposed as that was the look I was after, but I'll take your advice if you feel it needs lifting. ;)

Three Vivitar 285 flashes on tripods without modifiers. 2 at 45s behind subject and one on camera left 45 in front of model. All at 1/2 power and about 15 ft form model. The EXIF should be in the image.

EXIF isnt going to tell anything about manual external lighting.

I stated where I had the lights and what power. I use a lightmeter to measure the ambient and adjust my settings for the effect I want. Settings and light placement will vary based on subject, location, ambient, and the effect desired.
