Some from the Enchanted Forest press launch Wednesday evening, got the 'safe' shots out of the way then had a chance to have a play with shutter dragging, second curtain sync etc.
One bare blash with full CTO gel, hand held.

i used 580ex2 on camera and a 430ex off camera and set the flash to pre flash which sends out 3 red stripes on your victims. I'm sure there is another name for this

Number one -- the shadow on the face from the drill isn't working for me. I see what happened, but I find it distracting.

Number two. I like the softened effect of the hatchet light. You showed some real nice control here. Big fan of this shot.

Wow, yeah, that's me. That was generous of you. No, I don't work at Lowes. They gave away t-shirts one day.

I like the color and the photo is properly exposed, but the butterfly shadow is working against you here. The little drop shadow at the tip of the nose is creating a "hook" effect, accentuating the size of her nose -- something you always want to avoid, in my opinion.

This photo is well exposed, and the color is excellent, but I am not a fan of the lighting. There is way too much light on her right shoulder, in my opinion -- she has many fine assets to highlight, but thats not her best. :) Additionally, the light on her face has the shadow coming off her nose pointed at three o clock. If you raised the light higher, got it in closer to feather it off that shoulder, and moved it back a bit, that shadow would move to 5 o clock, and you would have a stellar photo.

In my opinion...... of course.

I think I know what you mean about the distracting shadow. However, I think it is from my shoulder, the light behind me.

I appreciate the comments on both; however, I'm afraid it was more of a lucky setup than real control.

Yep, I see it now. I jumped the drill conclusion because it was sorta drill shaped.

So the theme is working in the picture for sure. :)

i got one to share.. from a family session

many have asked me if i use a meter?

i don't have a meter..

what i do is get shutter speeds to support the look i like on the lcd.

then i turn my light up or down or slight adjustments in the fstop to get the proper look on the subject.

then if you are out of range, then bump your ISO one way or another and start all over.

keep in mind, my shutter speed sync is 1/200 max.. so the sweet spot is some where 1/100 and 1/200 for me..

and here is the photo

Hey Pham

I love her pose, but I think that background is really working against her. To me, the contrast between the leaves and the white sky are almost vibrating.

Did you try this as a BW, by any chance?
