Simon.
If I understand your post correctly. I would get a proper light stand, with an umbrella or swivel bracket rather than using a tripod for that purpose. If you mean a tripod for the camera then Ignore the above, but you dont really need a tripod while shooting with flash.

Hi Gonzo

As you surmised I meant for the camera, so I will concentrate on the light stand and brolly, or would a diffuser do the same job.

Also what's your handicap?

I hope to soon start asking for CC on the pictures.

Thanks
Simon

Diffusers are not the same. to get soft light you need to increase the apparent size of your light source (apparent size -actual size plus proximity). Diffusers, even the best ones. only increase the size of the light source by a tiny bit. Umbrellas, especially the convertible kind that have white interiors with removable black covers so you can use them either as reflective or shoot through are your best bet to start out.

My handicap is around a 12. I cant seem to get below that, part of the price for not taking up the game until my late 20s.

That should be an album cover

(CD cover for you kids.... or maybe a picture on your ipod when the song plays would be more correct nowadays)

What is the current "go to" off the camera radio flash trigger - is it the Pocketwizard or something else??
Thanks
Michael

Depends on what features you want. If you want simple manual triggers (no ETTL) then cybersyncs or the PWII's are great. The RF602's are getting great reviews for bargain triggers.

If you want ETTL then the Pocket wizards flex system or the radio popper PX system are the best options.

well stated Gonzogolf..

i might add, for the cost effective solution of radio frequency triggers, Cactus V4's do a pretty good job.. i use them even in wedding applications.. (edit they are manual system and will not get you ETTL nor higher shutter speeds of 1/250)

50 dollars will get you a set and they use AAA batteries for the recievers and the triggers will last a whole year even in heavy use..

I agree with gonzo on the rf602. I ordered three and they even work as a wireless shutter release
