I am looking for suggestions to make these better. I tried 2 different textures, with opacity set to ~50-70%, color balanced to make them a little more even. I know some do not like textures; that is okay. But I am looking for advice to improve these; that also includes what is wrong with them.
It's important to keep in mind a goal when applying a texture. Adding one merely for the sake of adding one is likely to result in something that looks awkward.
For example, here are some possible reasons to apply a texture:
• To provide subject separation
• To homogenize a busy background
• To heighten the particular mood or character of a photo (e.g. to accentuate a style the photo already has, such as gothic, retro, psychedelic, urban, etc.)
• To emphasize an atmospheric effect (fog, rain, sunset, etc.)
In other words, your texture should be a conceptual choice. It should follow an idea that you wanted to express with your image.
So: what does "grunge-type" or "crumpled paper" have to do with your photo? What did you hope to accomplish with the texture?
