nice shots.. what is your data?
welcome
phamster

Thank you. I don't worry so much about exact settings as much as I do about what looks right and produces the results that I am going for. IIRC though, I was somewhere around 1/250th, f/2.5 @ ISO 200 for the first one, and the second was 1/400th, f/1.8 @ ISO 200 using Canon's "High Speed Sync" on the 580EX II.

These are great! when you say ebay diffuser, do you mean something like a stofen product?
Also, where was the light positioned/distance and at what power?

I love the editing on the last one. It looks surreal.

Thanks. The best description I can give is the following, pulled from Google images:

http://shashinki.com/shop/images/JJC-FC26A-W.jpg (external link)

The light was positioned to camera left and a bit high to give a loop lighting on the models face in the first one. The second was just held slightly above and to the left of camera for a bit of fill. Flash power varied, but I believe it was around 1/16th for the first and 1/8 for the second.

Editing on the second was just some simple cloning for fly-aways, levels/curves adjustments, and a soft diffuse glow using Totally Rad's "Technicolor Dream World" and then tweaking it a bit. Then I did a few last color adjustments and Saved For Web.

i just got the lumiquest softbox III yesterday so i was testing it out in my room. pretty neat and could be useful for certain situations. like if you wanna do some strobist stuff on vacation! :D

heres a couple self-portraits. tried to kill ambient as much as possible but a lil light spill on the backround. i was pretty close to my closet though so i just did underexpose adjustment brush on it in lightroom to black it out. i had the sofbox III jus out of frame on the right and another flash to the back left with a grid.

I have been flipping through the pages of this thread for hours and I am simply amazed!!! I love the colors and contrast that are in these pictures. One question though...what would you say is your primary lens for taking these shots? This is not directed at anyone in particular...thanks to everyone for sharing.

pham, thanks man. your work great as well!!!! .. i went from 0 softbox to 3 (8x9, 28x28, and 50x50) in a matter of one month lol

Jared572, as far as lens goes .. its probably more of a personal preference but i tend to use my 85L often. sometimes ill put on the 17-40 for some wide angle effect. but other lens gets used too. depends on what im in the mood for :)

Wow talk about information overload. This is great so much talent and wonderful people sharing so we can learn. Thanks for everyones time and input. My question is what is the cheapest way to get my 580ex11 off the XTI but still be able to use ETTL? I would need to stay under 100. tia

I think the only way you could do that is with a long ETTL cable.

Just give it a go with manual, buy a couple of cheap ebay triggers for $40. ETTL just makes it easier but you can get the same quality photos using manual.
