Ok, so he hasn't really tried yet, but he has been eying my pup. We had this beautiful redtail hawk move into a neighbors evergreen, I think, and has been hanging around the house. He's already taken a squirrel or two and I think the one raiding my bird feeder was one of them as I haven't seen the squirrel in several days. Yesterday he landed on my pool fence and was just surveying the neighborhood. I snuck around and got a few pics of him before he flew off.

Really smooth shots John. This looks like a young bird, probably just sent away from his home as the parents are probably starting another family. He doesn't look too upset, did he see you?

Thanx.. He did eventually. I was sneaking up taking pics along the way and the shutter sound gave away my position. I got to maybe within 50 feet before he flew off. I tried to snap a quick one as he was flying away, but all I got was tail feathers. :)

Nice sharp shots John! Agree with Mitch about it being a juvenile RTH, you captured it well here!

 I don't think he will be taking your dog on anytime soon. The ones that will look at your dog like a meal is a Greathorned Owl.

Very nice pics of a immature Redtail!

A few months ago a RTH attacked a local homeowners dog when she let it out in the yard...small dog though. The lady stepped on the Hawks wing and separated it from the dog. A neighbor came over and put a coat over the Hawk and called a rescue place. The Hawk haden't eaten in a while according to the rehaber....but it was going to be released once it was back to health. The dog suffered minor cuts.

Sorry for going off track. Two great captures of a young Hawk.

Thanx for the comments all. I am not really all that concerned, though my pup is small, a Jack Russel. A few years back we had a red tail come in as if he was going to grab him, but when he go close, the talons came back up and he passed overhead. I've seen red tail take rabbits before but my pup is a bit bigger than a rabbit. We have had an explosion of rabbits and squirrels since the developers have chased away all the predators so I'm hoping that this guy sticks around and feasts a bit.
