Screw The Holy Trinity, now I'm back to wanting the 50L!

Congratulations on finally getting the right 50mm, it is such a sweet focal length on the 5D

I think the 50L will drive you bat-**** crazy if you like to shoot test charts, batteries, and boxes - the 35L definitely won't do that to ya. But yeah, it's all about focal length, although I can envision lots of people happily owning both.

You spelled Harbor and Colors wrong. Just sayin' Congrats!

:rolleyes::lol: Thanks Peter.

i love the shot where you focused on the duck's ass haha. honestly :)

Thank you :D. I was sitting next to that duck, waiting for it to jump to get an epic action shot. I failed .

Hey what's with all these obsession about bokeh. Nothing is in focus for these shots!

Seriously, looks like a winner! Congrats.

Screw that thread  - I likes me some bokeh. It's very interesting how this lens' bokeh compares to the Sigma's. They're very different, but both excellent in their own way.

It's s good copy and I think you're gonna love it....Keeping away from charts might be the only way to love this lens, the seperation and bokeh it provides at 1.2 is only bettered by the 85L. FWIW, I belive it should still be under warranty for a while, I might have a copy of the receipt still too if you need it.
Cheers and and fun Perry

I have enjoyed all the bokeh in the 50L samples I've seen on POTN. There is no doubt it is a stunner. ;)

Congrats on the new lens, it's weird though - I find that I like the 35mm focal length better on full frame, as opposed to 50mm.

To each his own ;)

I'm really glad you sold it Matt :D, and as Shawn said, I do have the receipt but I don't envision having to play "roll-the-Canon" with this one. I'm just gonna shoot with it and enjoy it!

Ahhh....Cool Perry, I'm like you Shawn, the 35L on the mk3 suited me much better, when I had a 1.3 crop, the 50L just didn't see much action.....But on FF it's my favorite FL for nearly everything......Lets see some more Perry

Believe me, I've been hunting for a good 50 for so long, it feels more like the end of a lot of frustration than a new toy. Plus I got a raise so it didn't hurt the wallet too much .

Yeah, I'm banning myself from any more big gear purchases for a while unless they're gonna make me more money than I pay for 'em. But the good normal prime was the last thing on the list and I've been hunting for one since the 35L. I'm very happy now :D.

Well, since you asked so nicely, sure !

a) You'd think the 50L + 5D would be the crappiest combo ever for AF, but it did ok here :D. Obviously this is a rather heavy crop:

Never. The 85L is just better. It smokes the 50L in every way, but that's unsurprising because nothing comes close to the 85L, it's the best lens I've ever owned and by far my favourite. I put the 50L in the same category of "sweetness" as the 35L, 135L, and 200 2.8L, all of which are awesome lenses - it's not as sharp as those three but its other qualities (plus the fact that it's 50mm) more than make up for it.

How sharp is it wide open? I've heard mixed reviews, and most say it gets pretty good at 1.4.

Congrats on the lens. Small world I guess.

Perry, you make it sound like Matt and I were the strongest advocates against the 50L, but I don't think that is true. I think it's pretty clear we give the 50L it's due. (Along with deserving negative remarks about it.)

My 50L is starting to grow on me too, especially once I got over the focus testing phase, which I was forced into because on my older copy I was seeing some major problems in real world shooting. I am really happy that it went to Canon and not another person b/c it really did shift that badly. So the positive was that they eventually exchanged my old for a UW date coded one.

I suspect on the full bodied shots, you would be far enough from the subject to be outside of the danger zone. At f2.8 you would also have enough DOF to avoid most of it as well. I can definitley make my copy shift all day long when shooting between MFD and 4 feet so. No need for charts for that. So I just try to stay away from that type of shooting. Sometimes I can't though, and it can be frustrating. It is also rather soft and has that ghostly look to things wide open at those distances. My 35L kicks the living day lights out of the 50L at those distances and at f1.4. No contest.

It's definitely a great lens if you can work around these issues. I use mine as a walkaround lens often, and it does very well in that capacity.
