Yes, you can just slap a Standard Adapter (external link) on the back of $300 Mola Demi or drill four holes in the edge and do the same to put a Speedotron BD on the Alien Bee. Heck... You can even buy a China Wok (external link) turned into a BD for Alien bee on ebay Here (external link). Problem is the flash tube is recessed into adapter ring. As most of you know from all these DIY mods we see it's real important to get the flash tube into the dish as far as possible. Here is a image to show you what I'm talking about.

The image on the left is standard adapter. See how much of the tube is recessed into the adapter? This is like having the tube in a small reflector which reflects most of the light forward into the diffusion disk instead of scattering the light all over the dish. On the right is a adapter that I've been working on to make the whole tube sit well into the dish. It mounts right onto the back of the Mola and is pre-drilled for the Speedotron. The result is now the high end Demi can now be used on the PCB flashes with full efficiency.
Here are the two side by side

Next on my list is to develop a low profile Speedring for the Alien Bee. See how much of the flash tube is hidden in the Speedring? I'm going to do my best to get that tube exposed into the softbox like other high end flashes and get the full bounce of the tube inside the box. Maybe Paul Buff will help us out and extend the flash tube forward with his new designed Einstein flashes.

Nice work on the BD adapter, Kacey. I am very interested in what you can come up with for the speedring. Good luck.

'the' softbox?

Which softbox? This thread explains how to adapt a Speedotron or Mola Demi beauty dish to a PCB strobe.

What specifically are you trying to do?

OK but I'm still confused. What does that have to do with the Kacey adapter for the Speedotron and Mola beauty dishes?

You're really not giving us much to go on. If you could explain yourself in more detail someone might chime in to help but right now I don't think it's clear what kind of help you need.

As Rob said, we need more information.
One consideration, if you bought the softboxes from PCB they already have the appropriate adapter ring.
Thus, you need to get nothing additional.
Likewise, if you bought the PCB beauty dish, it is configured for their monolights. So nothing to do.

I had no idea what to get to attach to the ab1600? for my softbox in which i purchased used from some local.. No ring so i have been using my buddies and sick of borrowing it need my own...
The adapters here in town at local stores are stupid high priced and really garbage and i don't think they will work on the alien bee...

I went shopping on pcbuffs site bought some extra bulbs and tubes ring adapter beauty dish and sock and i think a few grids as well a pcbuff vagabond bag so i can jam all my portable power gear into it ...aka stand weight

But you're not even mentioning the beauty dishes that are in the subject of this thread. Do you have a Speedotron or Mola beauty dish?

If not then I don't understand why you chose to post to this thread rather than a more generic Alien Bees thread or a new thread.

Before we go off in a million directions, can we find out if your situation has anything to do with using either of those 2 beauty dishes with PCB strobes?
