These birds are usually high atop the spruce trees, but it was nice to watch them work the fallen cones as well.

We had an "eruption" (the local ornithologist called it) of White-winged Crossbills down our way this winter. They've been spotted seemingly everywhere. I even got a few photos but like you said, they were high up in the trees. These ground shots are excellent. "the earth has music for those who listen."
