Here are 2 shots I took last Friday night. Any CC is greatly appreciated. All shots taken with a 450D, 85mm 1.8 lens at f/2.0, 1/500, ISO 1600, manual mode.

Is this ambient light or did you strobes?

The lighting looks GREAT.

1 is a great shot
2 lens backfocus, I am sure it wasn't you're fault, just the nature of the lens
3 has great Action! face is a bit soft for my taste but it is a great shot

overall great images for ISO 1600! keep shooting

GEAR LIST: My eyes, and my index finger + whatever camera is near by.

Thanks a lot! I'm still learning to handle the shallow DOF when shooting nearly wide-open with the 85 1.8. You have to be spot-on with the focus and it's quite tough. I'll be getting a 50D in the next 1-2 weeks, so hopefully that will help out quite a bit as far as getting better focus by allowing me to micro-adjust the 85, not to mention just having better focusing performance than the 450D.

None of the above. Shooting manual mode all the way; I do get a bit of variation in the exposure depending on my look angle in the gym, but it's easily corrected in PP. Also using AI servo, center point focus with the focus control on the * button.

Scary. I knew from your first image that you were using the 85mm f/1.8. They look just like my shots using the same gear. We use virtually the same camera settings as well.

Other than the focus issues associated with the lens, your shots are easily as good as I get at 2.0. One thing I'm going to try is using the "H" ISO on my 30D, dropping down to 1.8 and using a faster shutter speed. I truly wish I could go the other way to help with the focus issues caused by the razor thin depth-of-field with that lens, but I'm into trying new things!

Nice work. Post more!

The attached picture was taken with a Canon 40D, 85 mm 1.8 lens. ISO 3200, Shutter Speed 800 and Aperture 1.8. No Post Processing has been done yet.
Are the results closer to what you expect?
