Why do you keep coming on POTN?

This is where many of my best friends hang out...

skygod44 wrote in post #7435080 (external link)
I ask, because another member said POTN is a "gear" forum, which I thought was a pity, as photography is surely about more than just what we use to do it.

POTN has a gear forum, but that isn't all there is. In fact, I think it's a very insignificant part of the place. I recently followed a link someone posted that landed me in a thread in the gear section. It was the first time I'd visited that part of the forums in a couple years.

My name is Lonnie, but I answer to Thomas too.

Well, the title says it all to me: Photography On The Net is a place where I go to read and discuss all kinds of things photography-wise, as well as to share the results of our efforts with each other.

Gear is part of the discussion, but the aim is to grow in the craft and, hopefully, the art of photography.

Now, if I can just get some more gear...help me! What should I buy next:)?!

There are A LOT of photo forums out there, that much is for sure. None of them, from my searching, offer the depth and breadth of photo examples, sheer size of the historical knowledge base (older posts), active and helpful members (current posts), assistance for the pro and amateur alike, marketplace features and all of this with the Canon slant and you have a winner!

Add in the fact that all of this offered for free and I would ask someone that has a Canon digitial camera why they were NOT on POTN on a semi-regular basis.

To learn, improve, get feedback, get ideas and new perspectives by seeing what others are doing.

I was burdened by an absurd amount of money in my pockets and this forum has helped me to eliminate it quickly.

Ha ha...love this...yes, if nothing else this forum helps you JUSTIFY the purchase you just made...

But it does more: it has taught me about different vendors (the good, the bad, and the ugly) taught me how to better compose shots, educated me on equipment, made me realize that there is a learning curve for EVERYONE in photography...shown me how quickly an hour of my lunch break can pass at work:-)

Canon 40D, 17-85mm 4-5.6 IS, 100mm 2.8 Macro, 85mm 1.8, 50mm 1.4, Lensbaby Composer, (2) 580EXii speedlights, Rebel XT w/ 18-55mm & 70-200mm crap...I mean,Kit lenses:-)

Just promise me you see your friends in the real world too ;) Oh and I'm glad it's not just me who sees the gear section as a small part of POTN.

I understand the language spoken here; it doesn't raise my blood pressure like political sites; witty snark is not a requirement; everything loads without a bunch of pop ups; people care what other people think--in other words, it's not your normal internet tubes!

Okay now for my serious post :p

I first came here with a newly bought XTi and a copy of Understanding Exposure just seeking to improve my skills and have some questions answered. 21 months and an unholy amount of money spent later I've learned more about photography than I ever thought I'd learn, and have accomplished things I never knew I was capable of doing. It's also great to brush shoulders with the people here who are capable of some mind-blowing work.
