It's a place for me to talk to people about photography and for me to learn more about it...............

Hmm...talking and learning.
Maybe we should all be doing more of that; and not just in photography?

SuzyView wrote in post #7451553 (external link)
I have met over 20 of the members here.... Everyone is helpful and we all speak the same language. I've learned a ton here.

Phriendships and Photography....or is that Friendships and Fotography? ;)

I come here for the photo emasculation (well so far).

Eeeugh!

Mainly to search for the meaning of life. I haven't had much luck yet, but I got close in the 5DII speculation thread.

You've not heard? It's not the 5D2......it's "42".

tupper wrote in post #7452368 (external link)
Because I learned more on here in the 2 years Ive been here than in a proper photography class.

You know, I think you're right. Tog-classes can IMO stifle learning...

René Damkot wrote in post #7452858 (external link)
To learn, share knowledge and photographs, and to get a good laugh occasionally. (And no, that's not a reference to "the" joke)

Oh well, I liked it! But I like what you're saying....to learn, share know-how and have a laugh! :D

Photography~girl~ wrote in post #7453952 (external link)
to learn as much as i possibly can about photography(aka pick your brains. lol.),looking at AMAZING photos, and...i think that's it. (haven't been on long, so its not like i've 'met' anybody yet.)

Well, SuzyView says she's met (in the flesh!) over 20 members, so maybe you've found a forum with [probably] no axe murderers hanging around! As to learning, I think POTN is a great place for that. And it's saved me from buying the wrong lenses for my needs!
See you soon....

Here an easy one for you all.

Why do you keep coming on POTN?

For me, to help and be helped in photography, including equipment, tactics and subjects.
Then there is the competition section, where I have some fun trying to take the photo for the topics and sometimes even win :) ex. the Macro DSLR Speed Challenge (external link) ex2. Canon EOS DSLR Speed Challenge

I keep returning to POTN for the information, ideas and experience that I either never would have thought of, or enjoyed had it not been for this website.

I found this great place years ago while searching for an answer to a question I had with my G2. I was hooked. And I kept reading..

Naturalist wrote in post #7435170 (external link)
I keep returning to POTN to see what others are seeing in parts of the world that I have not visited in a long time, may never visit, and hope to visit some day.

I think this is the most under-estimated benefit of this forum. Seeing the pictures people bring back from the far corners.. And places near home. I NEVER would have known of Havasu Falls if it weren't for this forum. Too bad I planned on going less than a month after the flood. Now I wait for another hidden nugget to reveal itself..

I think it is absolutely amazing that I sit here in a small USA town communicating and exchanging ideas with people from all points around the globe: Australia, Great Britain, Russia, and the Orient to name but a few regions. Twenty-five years ago I would not have dreamt this possible.

It STILL amazes me that there are so many people who don't just know a little English; they are active participants of this forum in a language other than their native language!

Thanks to everyone (Espicially Pekka and the Mods) for making this a place where people WANT to come to learn and contribute.

I come here to try and learn as much as I can from some really great photographers. I hope to one day return the favor and give out my own advice...

I come here to observe human interactions. And man, this place is better than Times Square. It's kind of like a bargain-basement "Meeting of Minds," without, sad to say, an equivalent to Steve Allen.

Oh, yeah. There's the photography part, too. But please note that I am not a photographer. I am chauffeur, sherpa, researcher, and purchasing agent for a photographer.

This place is like a library or cafe to me - you can sit and read, debate with like minded friends, read up on developments, learn from others.

I might go as far as to say as far as photography is concerned, it might just be the perfect forum!

There are competitions?!?!? I didn't even know! Serves me right for spending so much time chatting, I suppose.

For me, it's been a place to learn. When I had G1 I googled it and came across images by Pekka that he had done with the G1 and I was amazed. It made me realize that knowing how to use your camera was more important than what kind of camera you have.

My foray into digital cameras started with the G1, then a Pro1, then a 20D and now a 40D and all along I've learned tons about using each one of them through the generosity, patience, kindness and skill of my fellow members of POTN.

This is a community of like minded people who have much in common. We all shoot with Canon and we all love photography. One of the things though that really makes POTN special for me is how civil everyone is here.

I belong to a few other photography forums as well and from each of them I learn different things, but to me this is the best. It feels like home.

POTN to me is a place for gaining knowledge, helping others understand that knowledge, offering varying points of view inside and outside the box and also for spending money. As said before, I first jumped into photography maybe 2 yrs ago with XTI....then 30D.....no 50D and some other gears. Great people here with sound, friendly advice. I love it here. Now we just need a meet up in our area!!;)

Here there downfall!
I really like your point about "inside and outside the box".

It seems so easy to "follow" rules regarding composition, lighting, framing, lens choice, aperture, etc. But when I see a picture that breaks those "rules" and just works, I kinda jump-for-joy!

Mastering the kit I've got, but not in the way "teacher told me" to use it, is one of my main goals. And POTN allows me to see that that dream is not insane or dumb. Creating the final image is the goal. Not following a rigid set of rules.
:D
