I usually bid a couple minutes before the auction is over to see if the competition reacts. If they react I wait until about 15 seconds before the auction is over and bid again.

My philosophy, not that it matters is I avoid fleabay like the plague.
Probably half of the people you are bidding against is the seller logged in with alternate credentials to raise the price. I had that happen to me multiple times before I quit going there altogether. How this works is you loose out by one bidder then at the tend of the auction the contact you offering it for your last bid. If you offer them your last bid before the price got hiked they refuse. I ccould write a book about the short comings of buying and selling on fleabay but Ill reserve that for another day.

When I first signed up on eBay, I found an item I wanted, and had a "bidding" war and eventually one the auction. But as I've been on eBay for roughly 10 years now, I've learned to "watch" items, and only bid in the last few minutes.

I guess people might be like me in the beginning and think their high bid with 4 days left might be the high bid, but doesn't it seem silly to bid on an item with days left to only continue to raise the price?

I've watching the lenses on ebay and they have days left and the prices have gone up a few hundred dollars already.

I do watches, and decide for myself up front what's the maximum amount I'm willing to pay for an item. If the bidding goes over that then I let it go.

I've seen bidding wars all too often go past what an item could be purchased new for because people got crazy. Good for the seller, bad for the sucker who ended up paying more than the item was worth.

I see where you're coming from and agree that fake price hiking is obviously wrong.

I think it's all about knowing the market value of your item and not letting yourself pay the same or more than you would in store.
